Chapter 10 - NOAH’S DECISION
Daniel told Noah that Sarah abandoned him.
He told him federal agents wanted to place him with strangers.
Noah believed him.
Unlike Lily, he was old enough to resist physically and young enough to be terrified of losing everything familiar.
Rebecca Sloan negotiated carefully.
Sarah recorded a message without demanding to be called Mom.
“I did not leave you. You do not have to believe me today.”
Noah watched it three times.
Then he asked Daniel why there were no photographs of Sarah signing adoption papers.
Daniel became angry.
That anger created the first crack.
Noah used Daniel’s phone while he slept and called the number from Sarah’s message.
Ortiz traced them to a motel outside Denver.
Agents entered without violence.
Daniel was arrested.
Noah refused to approach Sarah.
She accepted that.
The court placed him with a therapeutic family nearby while they began supervised contact.
Daniel’s arrest opened the master archive.
It contained records for forty-one women and twenty-eight children.
Some cases were decades old.
Some victims had died.
Some children were now adults who had no idea their identities were false.
Rebecca Sloan created a protected notification process.
Truth had to be delivered carefully, not dumped into lives for public spectacle.
The archive also revealed that Jason’s funeral plan for me was not his first.
He had prepared seven.
Every time I resisted, he changed the method.
Car accident.
Overdose.
Runaway.
Pregnancy complication.
He treated death as a document problem.
Then Dr. Reed found something in my scan.
My daughter had a small cardiac abnormality similar to Lily’s.
The safe cord-blood procedure might help both children later.
Margaret had not invented the genetic risk.
She had exploited it.
A legitimate medical issue became the justification for criminal control.
