Chapter 5 - THE SECOND FARM
The second farm sat near the Oklahoma border.
Federal agents arrived to find abandoned medical equipment, empty child bedrooms, and a freshly burned records room.
Lily had been there hours earlier.
A child’s drawing remained beneath a bed.
It showed a silver water tower and a red-roofed church.
Rachel recognized the church from a town where her aunt lived.
Agents searched properties nearby.
They found Lily inside a private pediatric clinic registered to Margaret’s foundation.
She was alive.
Weak.
Terrified.
Margaret was gone.
When Lily saw investigators, she screamed that they were taking her away from Grandma.
She did not know me.
Margaret had told her I abandoned her after birth.
Lily entered protected hospital care.
Our first meeting took place through a glass observation wall with a child therapist present.
She stared at my pregnant belly.
“Is that the good baby?”
My chest tightened.
“What do you mean?”
“Grandma said I was the sick one.”
I knelt slowly.
“You are not bad because you are sick.”
“She said the new baby would fix me.”
“She may help you one day if it’s safe and she chooses.”
Lily frowned.
“Babies don’t choose.”
“Then adults have to protect their choices until they can.”
She did not trust me.
Why would she?
The only mother she knew had taught her that love meant control.
Lily returned to her room without touching me.
I cried after she left.
Dr. Reed reminded me that reunion was not a single emotional scene.
It was a long process of proving safety repeatedly.
Then federal agents identified one of Jason’s missing women.
Megan Reed was alive inside a private psychiatric institution under a false name.
She had been declared incompetent after accusing Jason of stealing her infant.
Her testimony connected Margaret, Dr. Evelyn Carter, and a family-court judge named Samuel Vale.
