Chapter 14 - EMMA

Emma’s adoptive parents had followed a legal-looking process through the Carter Foundation.

They did not know I existed.

They loved her.

She loved them.

The court refused to treat her as property moved from one adult to another.

Instead, a child advocate created a gradual plan.

Truth.

Medical records.

Supervised biological contact.

No forced removal unless evidence showed danger.

I agreed.

It hurt.

It was still right.

Our first meeting took place at a child-development center.

Emma brought a stuffed horse.

She looked like Lily but smiled more easily.

“This lady says you grew me in your tummy.”

“Yes.”

“Are you taking me?”

“No.”

She studied me.

“Why not?”

“Because you have a home. I’m here to know you, not erase it.”

Her shoulders relaxed.

We colored together for twenty minutes.

She did not call me Mom.

She called me Emily.

That was enough.

Lily struggled more.

She believed biological sisters should live together immediately.

Her therapist helped her understand that stolen beginnings did not require another sudden separation.

Hope grew stronger in neonatal care.

Rachel visited Hannah every week.

Sarah and Noah exchanged letters.

Megan began using her real name again.

Healing formed through small, ordinary choices.

Then Rebecca Sloan brought me one final document.

Daniel Carter had not created the first illegal maternity home.

The operation began with a woman named Eleanor Grant.

She was ninety-four.

Still alive.

She had trained Margaret.

She had also been present at my birth.

The document contained a photograph.

Eleanor stood beside two newborn girls.

Lily and Emma were not the first twins taken from me.

The babies in the picture were older.

The mother’s name printed beneath them was Rachel Collins.

Rachel stared at the photograph.

“I have never been pregnant.”

The Carter network had erased part of her life too.
