Chapter 12 - THE DELIVERY

Labor progressed too quickly for transfer.

Dr. Reed assembled a secured team.

Ortiz stood outside.

Rachel waited with Lily.

I entered surgery terrified that every masked face might belong to Margaret.

Dr. Reed spoke clearly before anesthesia.

“Emily, I will identify every person who touches you.”

She did.

Nurse Priya.

Anesthesiologist Morgan Lee.

Pediatric specialist David Chen.

No strangers.

No hidden transfer.

My daughter was born small but breathing.

I named her Hope.

Dr. Reed collected cord blood safely and sealed it under federal supervision.

Lily’s treatment could proceed later.

No one owned the material.

No one could use it without ethical approval.

I held Hope for less than a minute before she entered neonatal care.

When I woke, Rachel sat beside me.

“Margaret tried to enter.”

She wore a nurse’s uniform and carried forged credentials.

Ortiz recognized her at the elevator.

Margaret was arrested without reaching the maternity floor.

For once, the plan failed before touching the child.

When Lily met Hope through the nursery glass, she asked, “Did you keep the right baby?”

The question nearly broke me.

“Yes.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I watched every step.”

She nodded slowly.

Evidence mattered to her.

Promises alone had been used too often.

The cord-blood procedure later helped stabilize Lily’s condition.

Hope was not harmed.

Medicine happened with consent, oversight, and care.

Everything Margaret claimed was impossible without control happened better without it.

Then prosecutors opened the final sealed record from Daniel’s archive.

It showed another child born during my forgotten first pregnancy.

Lily had not been alone.

Twin B was listed as transferred.

A second daughter existed.
