Chapter 7 - CLAIRE’S CHILD

Claire’s daughter was named Rose.

Margaret placed her with a wealthy couple through Judge Vale’s court.

The adoptive parents claimed they believed the process was legal.

They had paid a “medical donation” of $300,000 to the Carter Foundation.

DNA confirmed Rose’s identity.

The court did not remove her immediately.

She was six and deeply attached to the only parents she knew.

Instead, a child advocate began a careful legal review.

Claire could not be reunited with her.

But the truth could still restore her name.

That was when I understood justice would not look the same in every case.

Some children could return.

Some should remain where they felt safe while gaining truthful records and access to biological family.

No solution could undo the original crime.

Rebecca Sloan built the federal case around the broader system rather than promising perfect reunions.

Jason offered a plea deal.

He would identify Sarah Collins and the remaining children if prosecutors removed the murder charge.

Rebecca refused.

He sent me another message.

RACHEL IS NOT WHO YOU THINK.

Rachel had been the reason I escaped.

I did not want to doubt her.

Ortiz investigated anyway.

Rachel had visited Carter properties three times before buying the truck.

Her late sister, Hannah, had disappeared after dating Jason eight years earlier.

Rachel had approached the farm under a false shopping story because she suspected him.

She had not arrived by accident.

When I confronted her, she admitted everything.

“I came looking for Hannah.”

“Why didn’t you tell police first?”

“I did. They said there wasn’t enough.”

“So you came alone.”

“Yes.”

“You could have gotten us both killed.”

“I know.”

She did not defend the decision.

Then she showed me Hannah’s last message.

A photograph of the same starvation box before it was finished.

Across the bottom Hannah had written:

IF I DISAPPEAR, JASON BUILT THIS FOR ME.

Rachel had spent eight years searching.

The box was not created for Sarah, Megan, Claire, or me.

May you like

It was built for Hannah.

And Rachel believed her sister might still be alive.
