The Recording Outside the ICU / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - THE RANGE

I pulled Gabriel behind a concrete barrier.

Federal agents returned fire.

The shooter escaped into the woods but abandoned a rifle registered to Lenora’s security company.

Gabriel pressed both hands over his ears.

He had been trained for violence but remained a child inside it.

Ortiz reached us.

Gabriel initially refused to leave with me.

He agreed to leave with Nurse Carla, who had treated him years earlier.

He remembered her giving him an extra blanket.

One small kindness survived longer than Samuel’s conditioning.

The range contained another evidence room.

Samuel had stored recordings of fathers being manipulated through guilt, duty, and false reports.

I was not unique.

Military personnel, police officers, and overseas contractors had been selected because long absences could be normalized.

Vale separated children from parents, then used the separation to construct abandonment narratives.

The network turned distance into control.

Gabriel entered protective care near Julian and Jonah.

He did not want to meet them immediately.

I respected that.

Caroline struggled with his existence.

Not because she blamed him.

Because every new child revealed another layer of violation.

We began family therapy before we began family life.

Lenora’s attorney offered a plea agreement.

She would identify the escaped shooter and other Vale facilities in exchange for reduced charges.

Prosecutors considered it.

I wanted the information.

I also wanted consequences.

Both could exist.

Lenora named the shooter.

Dr. Thomas Reed.

Evelyn Reed’s husband.

Dr. Reed had told me she was divorced.

Thomas had supposedly died in a boating accident.

No body was found.

Another false death.

Thomas had worked with Samuel from the beginning.

He controlled the program’s cardiac research.

Dr. Reed had not known he was alive.

Then a hospital camera captured Thomas entering the pediatric wing.

He wore a staff badge.

May you like

He carried a sealed medical cooler.

Inside Julian’s room, the monitor suddenly flatlined.
