Chapter 4 - CAROLINE’S FILES
Dr. Reed compared Julian’s DNA with mine.
He was my biological son.
The result should have brought relief.
Instead, it created another question.
If Jonah was his identical twin, he was my son too.
Caroline had carried twins.
Why did every record show one birth?
Her obstetrician had been Samuel Vale.
The hospital file described an emergency delivery followed by the death of Twin B.
No death certificate existed.
Lenora took custody of the body.
There had been no body.
Jonah was hidden at the estate while Caroline and I raised Julian.
Why would Caroline allow it?
Rebecca Sloan, an attorney assisting Ortiz, found evidence that Lenora held financial guardianship over Caroline during pregnancy. Samuel declared her temporarily incompetent after a supposed psychiatric crisis.
Lenora controlled every medical decision.
Caroline had no legal power to stop the separation.
She spent years trying to recover Jonah secretly.
The audio messages were part of an evidence archive she prepared before her death.
A technician restored another file.
Caroline whispered:
“Julian and Jonah both belong to Mason. Mother separated them because one carried the Vale mutation and one didn’t.”
The mutation weakened bones during childhood but could lead to unusually rapid tissue regeneration later in life.
Samuel wanted to study both twins under different conditions.
Jonah received treatment.
Julian served as the untreated comparison.
Then the roles changed.
When Jonah developed severe complications, Samuel began testing the drug on Julian.
Lenora called the fractures accidents because admitting them would expose the program.
Caroline discovered everything.
She broke into the vault.
Then she died.
Ortiz searched Lenora’s financial records.
Payments had been made to a private driver on the night of Caroline’s accident.
The driver vanished afterward.
A vehicle-camera image showed Lenora’s car following Caroline on the mountain road.
The crash had not been random.
Then the unknown sender contacted me again.
A live video showed Jonah inside a dark room.
A man stood behind him.
Dr. Samuel Vale.
He was supposed to be in Europe.
Samuel held the remaining half of the silver key.
He said, “Bring Mason to the vault.”
