Chapter 2 - THE SECOND BOY

The boy disappeared through the stairwell before security reached him.
Camera footage confirmed he was real.
He had entered through the pediatric recovery floor wearing a stolen gown and left through an employee corridor.
No admission record matched his face.
No child had been reported missing from the hospital.
Yet three cameras captured him clearly.
He looked like Julian’s twin.
I had never known Julian had a twin.
Lenora refused to explain.
Her attorney arrived before the police did and instructed her not to answer questions.
Dr. Reed ordered guards outside Julian’s room.
The toxicology report confirmed a veterinary sedative and traces of a drug that weakened bone density over time.
Julian had not simply been beaten.
Someone had made his bones easier to break.
Dr. Reed believed the older fractures began almost two years earlier—before I left for the overseas contract.
That meant I had lived in the same country, sometimes the same house, while the damage began.
I remembered Julian refusing to hug me after visits with Lenora.
I thought he was grieving Caroline.
He had been protecting broken ribs.
Detective Lena Ortiz arrived with child-abuse investigators.
I gave her the recordings.
Lenora gave her the incident statement.
Her lawyer said the forged signature was an administrative error.
Ortiz examined him.
“Someone accidentally forged Mr. Thorne’s name before an accident occurred?”
The lawyer stopped speaking.
Hospital security found a hidden transmitter taped beneath Julian’s bed.
Someone had been monitoring the ICU room remotely.
The device connected to an address at Vale Manor, Lenora’s estate.
Ortiz obtained an emergency search warrant.
Lenora smiled when she heard.
“You will find nothing.”
The certainty told me the evidence had already moved.
Then my phone received a photograph.
The unknown sender had captured the second boy standing beside a stone wall.
Behind him was the entrance to an underground room.
The message read:
HE IS JONAH. JULIAN KNOWS WHERE CAROLINE HID THE KEY.
I showed Ortiz.
She enlarged the image.
The stonework matched Vale Manor’s oldest wing.
The silver fragment marked V might be part of a key to a hidden vault.
Lenora had called it that without hesitation.
The fractures, the sedatives, and the recording were all connected to something Caroline hid.
Dr. Reed allowed me into Julian’s room for one minute.
I sat beside him and took his uninjured hand.
“Buddy, I’m here.”
His eyelids moved.
Not open.
Just enough to show he heard me.
I leaned closer.
“Jonah is safe.”
Julian’s fingers tightened around mine.
Then he whispered through dry lips.
“Not safe.”
“What?”
“Grandma found him.”
The heart monitor accelerated.
Dr. Reed entered.
Julian forced out one more sentence.
May you like
“She said only one of us can be your son.”
Then he lost consciousness again.
