Chapter 3 - THE VAULT UNDER THE ESTATE

Police searched Vale Manor before dawn.

The estate sat behind iron gates on forty acres of wooded land. Lenora had raised Caroline there. Julian had spent six months inside its stone walls.

Investigators found his bedroom spotless.

Too spotless.

New sheets.

Fresh paint.

No toys except those visible in photographs sent to me.

A hidden door behind the wardrobe led to a narrow treatment room.

Restraints were attached to a padded table.

Veterinary sedatives sat inside a locked cabinet.

Dr. Samuel Vale’s fingerprints covered the bottles.

The room contained height charts for two boys.

JULIAN.

JONAH.

Their measurements began on the same date six years earlier.

Both had lived at the estate.

Only Julian appeared in public.

A second hidden passage led beneath the mansion.

At the end stood a steel vault door with a damaged lock.

The letter V engraved on the fragment matched the keyway.

Someone had snapped the key during a struggle.

Inside the passage, investigators found dried blood belonging to Caroline.

Her car accident occurred three days after that blood was deposited.

She had discovered the vault before she died.

Ortiz called from the estate.

“The door requires the remaining key section and a numerical code.”

Lenora knew both.

She refused to cooperate.

I visited her interview room.

She sat behind a glass partition, still wearing the beige suit.

“You drugged Julian.”

“I protected him from pain.”

“You weakened his bones.”

“That treatment came from Samuel.”

“You watched him break.”

Her face tightened.

“I did what Caroline made necessary.”

“What is inside the vault?”

“Proof that your wife lied to you.”

“About Jonah?”

“About everything.”

She claimed Caroline had participated in an illegal fertility program run by Dr. Vale. The twins were created for research involving a rare skeletal-regeneration disorder.

I did not believe the version.

But lies often carried fragments of truth.

“Which one is my son?”

Lenora smiled.

“That is the wrong question.”

I remembered the second boy’s words.

You broke the wrong one.

May you like

Lenora leaned toward the glass.

“Ask which one Caroline chose to keep.”
