Chapter 9 - THE CHOICE

Dr. Reed explained every step to Jonah.

No euphemisms.

No pressure.

No promise that Julian would survive.

Jonah asked for Caroline.

She joined by video from Room Nine.

He had known her only through secret visits and stolen letters.

“Did you choose Julian?” he asked.

Caroline began crying.

“No. They chose for me.”

“Did you want me?”

“Every day.”

Jonah looked away.

“I don’t remember you.”

“I know.”

She did not ask him to call her Mom.

She did not use guilt.

That honesty reached him.

Jonah agreed to donate cells.

Dr. Reed performed the procedure with an independent ethics team.

I signed nothing for him.

He signed for himself with a child advocate present.

The therapy began.

Julian’s heart stabilized slowly.

The fractures would require months of treatment.

Some damage might remain permanent.

Justice could not restore bone as if nothing happened.

Jonah sat beside his bed afterward.

He placed the red toy airplane between them.

“You can have it until you wake up.”

Julian’s fingers moved.

Jonah noticed.

Then Julian opened his eyes.

He looked at me first.

Then Caroline’s face on the tablet.

Then Jonah.

“Your face is mine.”

Jonah almost smiled.

“No. Yours is mine.”

The reunion lasted less than one minute before Julian fell asleep again.

But it was real.

Federal prosecutors began reviewing the vault.

The files implicated Lenora, Samuel, Judge Vale, hospital administrators, lawyers, and donors.

One file carried Caroline’s name.

Another carried mine.

Samuel had created a psychological profile of me before Julian’s birth.

He studied my military history and predicted I would accept long absences if framed as duty.

They had selected me as a father because they believed I could be separated from the children easily.

My service had not merely kept me away.

It had been used against me.

Then Ortiz opened a sealed file labeled THORNE — PRIOR ISSUE.

Inside was a photograph of another boy.

Age twelve.

He had my eyes.

His name was Gabriel.

According to the file, he was my biological son.

Born four years before I met Caroline.

I had never known he existed.
