Chapter 10 - Charles Bell

Charles Bell arrived with two attorneys.
That told me he understood the stakes.
He denied everything.
“I have never participated in theft from Sterling Global.”
Vanessa’s attorney asked whether he possessed a second ledger.
“No.”
“Has Malcolm Hayes ever given you financial records?”
“No.”
“Did you attend William Sterling’s final trust dinner?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know about the frozen account?”
Charles paused.
“I learned about it later.”
Jonathan immediately looked at me.
That answer was wrong.
Dad’s notes showed Charles had been briefed before the dinner.
When confronted, Charles corrected himself.
“I misunderstood the question.”
Nobody believed him.
But suspicion wasn’t proof.
Then Eleanor noticed his watch.
Not the watch itself.
His habit.
Every time Charles lied, he rubbed the leather strap with his thumb.
She remembered him doing it during Dad’s final months whenever questions arose about the trust.
We couldn’t use a nervous gesture as evidence.
We could use it as a reason to keep asking.
My attorneys obtained records through proper corporate procedures and, where necessary, legal process rather than touching private accounts ourselves.
A transfer pattern emerged.
Charles had received consulting payments from an investment advisory company.
That company shared an address with one of the LLCs connected to the missing $48.2 million.
Charles still insisted the payments were legitimate.
Then Vanessa supplied something stronger.
An audio message Malcolm had sent her.
“Bell gets paid after Richard is removed. Until then, keep the child situation unstable.”
Charles stopped rubbing his watch.
His attorneys requested a break.
That was our third major payoff.
Malcolm had not merely exploited a caregiver.
He had compromised a trustee.
But the recording created a problem.
“Removed” could mean removed from corporate authority, not physically harmed.
We refused to exaggerate it.
The truth was already serious enough.
Charles’s attorneys returned with an offer to cooperate.
He admitted accepting undisclosed payments.
He claimed he believed Malcolm was financing a shareholder strategy, not stealing company money.
Then he revealed the purpose of the custodial attack.
If I were temporarily removed as Sophie’s sole decision-maker during an investigation, Charles intended to petition for appointment of an independent fiduciary over certain trust interests.
A fiduciary he had already selected.
A firm secretly connected to Malcolm.
The plan wasn’t to steal Sophie.
It was to use concern for Sophie as a legal lever against me.
Then Charles gave us the name of the person who had designed that structure.
Jonathan Pierce.
I turned toward my father’s attorney.

Jonathan didn’t deny drafting it.
📖 Jonathan had built the legal mechanism Malcolm planned to exploit, and discovering why my father authorized it would expose the mistake that made the entire conspiracy possible. 👇
