Chapter 5 - My Father’s Warning

Jonathan refused to discuss the account over the phone.

That made me suspicious enough to insist he come to the house.

He arrived at 8:11 p.m. carrying nothing except his briefcase.

Marcus had already isolated the surveillance equipment from the network. Sophie was asleep against Eleanor upstairs after eating properly and drinking enough that Laura was comfortable leaving her in my care overnight.

I stayed downstairs.

Jonathan entered the study and closed the door.

“Your father suspected embezzlement.”

“By Malcolm?”

“He suspected several people.”

“Was Vanessa involved?”

“I never heard her name.”

That mattered.

Jonathan explained that Dad had discovered irregular transfers from a Sterling Global subsidiary eighteen months earlier. The transfers eventually reached investment entities controlled through layered LLCs.

Total exposure:

$48.2 million.

Dad quietly froze a related reserve account while an outside forensic firm investigated.

“Why wasn’t I told?”

“He didn’t know whom to trust.”

“Including me?”

Jonathan looked ashamed.

“Including you.”

That hurt more than I expected.

Then he explained the trust amendment.

Dad had shifted certain voting rights so that if I became legally incapacitated or died before Sophie reached adulthood, those shares would remain protected for Sophie rather than automatically consolidating under another Sterling executive or family trustee.

My daughter wasn’t merely an heir.

She was a barrier.

I stood.

“Someone was watching her because of voting stock?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then what does C.B. mean?”

Jonathan froze.

That reaction answered more than words could.

“You know.”

“I’ve seen those initials before.”

“Where?”

“In your father’s notes.”

He opened his briefcase and removed a photocopy.

C.B. = Custodial Breach.

My pulse slowed.

“What does that mean?”

“Your father believed someone might attempt to challenge your fitness as Sophie’s custodial parent.”

Suddenly the dog bowl looked different.

The bruises.

The weight loss.

The surveillance.

If someone recorded Sophie neglected inside my house while I traveled constantly, they could create a narrative.

Not necessarily take her permanently.

But damage me.

Damage my credibility.

Damage my control of the trust.

“Vanessa wasn’t just hurting her,” I said.

Jonathan’s face tightened.

“She may have been manufacturing evidence that you were allowing it.”

From the doorway came Eleanor’s voice.

“Richard.”

I turned.

She held Vanessa’s phone.

Marcus stood beside her.

Vanessa had finally agreed to unlock it in exchange for having her attorney present before any formal interview.

A message from Malcolm had arrived twelve minutes earlier.

DO NOT LEAVE. MAKE HIM ANGRY. KEEP EVERYTHING ON CAMERA.

I stared at those words.

Throwing the bowl.

Shouting.

Grabbing Vanessa’s wrist.

Every reaction had been useful to them.

They had wanted footage of me losing control.

May you like

And I had given it to them.

📖 I had walked straight into Malcolm’s trap on camera, and his next move would use my own anger to make me look dangerous around Sophie. 👇
