Chapter 9 - Jonathan’s Visit

Jonathan didn’t deny it.

“I went there.”

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“Why?”

“Because Vanessa contacted me.”

Every answer created another fracture.

Vanessa had claimed she discovered old documents among her mother’s possessions connecting Caroline to Sterling Global’s missing money. She offered Jonathan copies if he came privately.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because she specifically said you were involved.”

I stood so quickly my chair struck the wall.

Eleanor caught my arm.

“Richard.”

Malcolm wanted anger.

I remembered.

I sat again.

Jonathan continued.

Vanessa showed him one document: a twenty-two-year-old internal ledger bearing Caroline Hayes’s initials beside unauthorized transfers.

Jonathan suspected it was fabricated.

He took photographs and left.

“Where are the photographs?”

He produced them.

A forensic document examiner retained by counsel compared the ledger image with archived Sterling records.

The paper format was historically plausible.

The transaction codes were not.

One code hadn’t been introduced until twelve years later.

Forgery.

Vanessa had tried to rewrite her mother’s history.

But why?

Marcus found the answer in Malcolm’s messages to Daniel.

Malcolm believed the modern $48.2 million embezzlement scheme could be disguised as the continuation of an old fraud network supposedly started by Caroline.

Vanessa believed Malcolm was clearing their mother’s name.

He was actually preparing to blame her.

Even dead, Caroline was being used.

When Vanessa learned that, her composure finally cracked.

Her attorney had arranged a controlled interview.

“You’re lying,” she whispered.

We showed her the transaction code discrepancy.

Then Malcolm’s draft memorandum referring to “legacy Hayes diversion structures.”

Vanessa read the phrase three times.

Her lips trembled.

“My mother reported them.”

“I believe she did,” Jonathan said.

“And Malcolm knew?”

Nobody answered immediately.

Vanessa began crying.

I felt no sympathy strong enough to erase Sophie’s bruises.

But I understood the cruelty of Malcolm’s manipulation.

He had weaponized Vanessa’s grief, then planned to sacrifice her mother’s reputation when necessary.

Vanessa looked at me.

“I can prove Malcolm moved the money.”

My attorney leaned forward.

“How?”

“He kept a second ledger.”

“Where?”

Vanessa’s eyes shifted toward me.

“Not where. With whom.”

She named one of the seven people who attended Dad’s trust dinner.

Trustee Charles Bell.

C.B.

We had assumed the initials meant Custodial Breach because Dad used that abbreviation.

But on Malcolm’s private records, C.B. meant something else.

A person.

And Charles Bell controlled the trust mechanism designed to protect Sophie.

📖 Charles Bell was supposed to protect Sophie’s inheritance, but Vanessa’s accusation meant the man guarding the trust might have helped create the threat against her. 👇
