Chapter 22 - Why Daniel Sent Me Home
“I wanted you to find her.”
Daniel said it without asking forgiveness.
His attorney sat beside him.
“So you changed my calendar?”
“Yes.”
“Why not call me?”
“Malcolm monitored my calls.”
“You could have gone to police.”
“I should have.”
He swallowed.
“But I thought if you saw Sophie yourself, you’d stop everything immediately.”
Daniel had discovered Vanessa was withholding food.
He confronted her.
She told him Malcolm wanted damaging footage.
Daniel believed Malcolm would intervene if he knew Vanessa had escalated.
Instead, Malcolm told Daniel:
“Stay on schedule.”
That was when Daniel realized Sophie’s suffering had become useful to Malcolm even if he hadn’t originally ordered it.
Daniel panicked.
He altered my calendar.
He wanted me home.

“So you saved her by throwing me into their trap.”
“Yes.”
His eyes filled.
“I didn’t know what else to do.”
I wanted to hate him cleanly.
Life refused to cooperate.
Daniel had betrayed me for months.

“If I hadn’t come home?”
“I was going to take her out of the house myself.”
That did not absolve him.

The evidence now established the timeline with unusual clarity:
Malcolm recruited Daniel through coercion.
Daniel installed surveillance access.
Vanessa entered the house through Malcolm’s network.
Charles manipulated financial and trust structures.
Vanessa escalated the custodial scheme into direct mistreatment.
Daniel broke from the plan when Sophie’s safety deteriorated.
Malcolm chose to exploit the escalation rather than stop it.
The remaining missing link was intent around the $48.2 million.
The database showed movement.
Messages showed codes.
But Malcolm claimed Charles acted independently and used his name without authorization.
Then Miriam remembered Dad’s first interview with Malcolm.
Dad had recorded it.
The file wasn’t in the vault.
Jonathan searched the estate index.
It had been logged as Exhibit 17.
Missing.
One piece.
One decisive connection.
Charles claimed Malcolm had taken it.
Malcolm claimed it never existed.
Then Eleanor looked at Dad’s handwritten inventory.

Caroline.
