Chapter 8 - What Eleanor Hid

“I thought you’d kill her.”

Eleanor’s voice was barely audible.

We sat across from each other in Dad’s old study.

“Where is the card?”

“In my purse.”

“Why take it?”

“Because I watched part of it.”

She handed it to Marcus.

He made a forensic copy before opening anything.

The footage covered several days.

Watching it was the hardest thing I had ever done.

Vanessa withheld meals when Sophie cried.

She placed food on the kitchen counter where Sophie could see it, then removed it.

She mocked a toddler for reaching toward her.

Once, she gripped Sophie’s upper arm hard enough to explain the bruises.

Eleanor covered her mouth.

I kept watching because Sophie deserved a father who could face what had happened when he wasn’t there.

Then the footage gave us something unexpected.

Malcolm visited the nursery.

He confronted Vanessa.

“What the hell are you doing?”

“She needs discipline.”

“She’s fifteen months old.”

“This was never about hurting her.”

Vanessa laughed.

“You care now?”

Malcolm lowered his voice.

“The objective is Richard. Not the child.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You promised me he would lose everything.”

There it was.

Personal hatred.

Not merely money.

Malcolm had recruited his sister for a corporate scheme, but Vanessa had another motive.

The next recording explained part of it.

Vanessa held up an old photograph.

My father stood beside a younger woman I recognized after several seconds.

Vanessa’s mother.

Caroline Hayes.

“You Sterlings destroyed her,” Vanessa said toward the hidden camera, apparently recording something she intended to send Malcolm. “Richard gets to raise his princess in this palace while Mom died believing your family stole her life.”

I called Jonathan.

He knew Caroline’s name.

Twenty-two years earlier, she had worked in Sterling Global accounting.

She had accused a senior executive of manipulating expense accounts.

She was fired.

The executive who signed the termination paperwork was my father.

But Jonathan added something crucial.

“William later believed Caroline had been telling the truth.”

“Did he compensate her?”

“He tried to find her.”

Too late.

Caroline had died six years earlier.

Vanessa’s hatred finally had a shape.

But the footage contained the second major payoff:

Malcolm’s scheme and Vanessa’s abuse were related, but they were not identical.

He wanted control.

She wanted punishment.

And she had chosen my daughter to deliver it.

Then Marcus stopped the footage.

A third voice had entered the nursery.

May you like

Jonathan’s.

📖 My father’s attorney had secretly visited Vanessa inside Sophie’s nursery, and his explanation would determine whether our strongest ally had been lying from the beginning. 👇
