Chapter 11 - CHARLES BENTON

Charles did not deny receiving the money.

He denied what it meant.

“It was repayment.”

“For what?”

“A private investment.”

“From Leonard?”

“Yes.”

“Why did he route it through a consulting entity?”

Charles loosened his tie.

“That was his decision.”

Melissa placed the bank record between us.

$175,000.

Same week as the Hartford controversy.

Charles had been an audit-committee member responsible for reviewing project compliance.

“You understand how this looks.”

“I understand exactly how Vanessa wants it to look.”

That answer caught me.

“You've spoken to Vanessa?”

Charles looked at Daniel.

Then back at me.

“She contacted me yesterday.”

“What did she want?”

“Protection.”

“From me?”

“She said you would destroy anyone who supported her.”

“And you believed her?”

“No.”

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

“Because this board cannot become an extension of your domestic war.”

I stood.

“This stopped being domestic when she leaked corporate records.”

Charles stood too.

“You don't know she leaked them.”

“No. But you know more than you're saying.”

His jaw tightened.

Daniel interrupted before the conversation became useless.

“Mr. Benton, preserve every communication with Vanessa.”

Charles laughed bitterly.

“You think I’m part of this?”

“I think preservation is cheaper than explaining deletion.”

Charles left.

Two hours later he resigned as board chairman.

That was the power shift Vanessa wanted.

The board appointed an interim chair and restricted my unilateral access to certain historical records pending an independent review.

I remained CEO.

But my freedom narrowed.

Vanessa had damaged me without winning a single factual argument.

Then Maria called.

“Mr. Sterling, someone came to my apartment.”

“Who?”

“A man. He offered me money.”

“How much?”

“Fifty thousand dollars.”

“For what?”

“To say I misunderstood what I saw.”

My pulse jumped.

“Did you take anything?”

“No.”

“Did you get his name?”

“He gave me a card.”

She photographed it.

The man was a private investigator named Gregory Shaw.

Daniel searched his firm.

Shaw had represented corporate clients, divorce attorneys, insurers.

Nothing tied him directly to Vanessa.

Until Melissa found an old invoice.

Gregory Shaw had worked for Sterling Group.

In 2017.

Hired by Thomas Keene.

I called Thomas immediately.

He sounded exhausted.

“Yes, I hired him.”

“To do what?”

“Find Leonard.”

“Did he?”

“No.”

“Is he working for you now?”

“No.”

“Can you prove that?”

Thomas became angry.

“After thirty years with your family, you think I’m bribing your nanny?”

“After thirty years with my family, you hid six million dollars of relevant history from me.”

He hung up.

Ten minutes later, Daniel received an email from Thomas.

Attached was a scanned invoice.

Shaw’s 2017 investigation had not failed.

The last page contained an address for Leonard Vale.

And handwritten beneath it were four words:

FOUND. ELEANOR SAYS STOP HERE.

My mother had known where Leonard was.

Again, she had kept silent.

📖 The investigation kept circling back to my mother, and this time I needed to know whether Eleanor had merely protected the family—or secretly negotiated with Vanessa’s father. 👇
