Chapter 4 - FORTY-SEVEN DAYS

The first recording destroyed the version of my family I had been living inside.
It was twelve days old.
Sophie sat in her high chair eating banana pieces.
Vanessa stood behind her scrolling through her phone.
Sophie dropped her cup.
Vanessa jerked around.
“Stop it.”
Sophie reached toward the cup.
Vanessa picked it up, slammed it onto the counter, then gripped Sophie under the chin hard enough to make her cry.
I stopped the video.
Daniel said nothing.
I made myself continue.
Nine days earlier, Vanessa shoved Sophie’s hand away from a cabinet and called her “a little parasite.”
Seven days earlier, she yanked Sophie out of the hallway because Sophie crawled toward my office while I was on a video call.
Five days earlier, Sophie cried at the front door after I left.
Vanessa stood over her.
“Daddy isn't coming back because you scream.”
I paused the recording again.
My vision blurred.
Every evening I had come home and Sophie had rushed toward me.
I had thought it was love.
Now I understood part of it had been relief.
Daniel touched my shoulder.
“We have enough to establish a pattern.”
“No.”
He looked at me.
“No?”
“We have enough to establish what she did where that camera could see.”
I searched the recordings by date.
Then Maria appeared.
Three weeks earlier.
Exactly when she said the confrontation happened.
Maria entered carrying folded laundry.
She stopped.
Vanessa was gripping Sophie’s upper arm.
Maria put the laundry down and immediately took Sophie from her.
There was no audio from that camera angle, but their body language was unmistakable.
Vanessa pointed toward the door.
Maria argued.
Vanessa stepped close to her face.
Maria left twenty minutes later.
Daniel exhaled.
“That corroborates Maria.”
Then he noticed something.
“Go back.”
I rewound.
On the console table beside Vanessa sat my phone.
The screen lit.
Vanessa looked at it.
She picked it up.
A minute later, she carried it out of camera range.
The timestamp matched Maria’s first attempted call.
My jaw clenched.
“She had my phone.”
Daniel nodded.
We kept watching.
At 9:42 that night, Vanessa returned, placed my phone back on the table, and walked away.
I checked my account history.
Maria’s number had been blocked at 9:39.
Three minutes earlier.
The evidence no longer showed only abuse.
It showed concealment.
That was the first major answer.
Maria had told the truth.
Vanessa had intercepted her warning and blocked her number.
But the footage created another question.
At 10:03, someone entered the living room.
My mother.
Eleanor Sterling.
She looked directly at Vanessa.
Vanessa said something.
Then Eleanor glanced toward Sophie’s room.
My mother’s expression changed.
She reached for her phone.
Vanessa grabbed her wrist.
The recording had no usable audio.
But Eleanor stayed another forty minutes.
And during those forty minutes, she never came upstairs to find me.
My mother had been in the house the night Maria tried to warn me.
She had seen enough to know something was wrong.
May you like
And she had never told me.
📖 I called my mother expecting an explanation for her silence, but what Eleanor admitted revealed that Vanessa had been threatening more than my engagement. 👇
