The Sterling House / Chapter 19 / 27

Chapter 19 - BEFORE WE MET

The file did not contain a plan to hurt Sophie.

It contained research.

That distinction mattered.

Leonard had died four years earlier, so the date label could not have been his.

Vanessa created the folder later using his archive system.

Inside were photographs of me leaving Sterling headquarters.

Public articles about Sophie’s birth.

My late wife, Anna.

My mother.

Our mansion.

A copy of a magazine profile describing Sophie’s trust.

Vanessa had researched my daughter before approaching me.

The last document was a handwritten page.

OBJECTIVES:

Meet Richard naturally.

Do not mention Dad.

Learn what Eleanor paid for.

Find original Sterling documents.

Get proof.

Then one line had been added later:

Make him understand what they took from us.

No marriage plan.

No violence plan.

No instruction to hurt Sophie.

But the relationship itself had begun under false pretenses.

I remembered our first date.

Vanessa laughed when I mentioned my father’s obsession with handwritten notes.

She said, “Mine was the same.”

I had thought it was coincidence.

She knew.

She had known almost everything.

I knew almost nothing.

That realization ended whatever emotional confusion remained.

I had loved a constructed identity.

Some moments between us may have been genuine.

The foundation was not.

Daniel found another notebook in the box.

It tracked dates.

My travel.

My mother’s visits.

Maria’s schedule.

Security upgrades.

Vanessa had documented the household long before our engagement.

Then the entries changed.

After I proposed, the notes became emotional.

Richard still won't discuss changing Sophie’s trust.

Eleanor treats me like temporary furniture.

Sophie screams whenever Richard leaves.

Then:

I hate the way he looks at her like nobody else exists.

That sentence made me stop.

There was no Leonard.

No inheritance.

No corporate grievance.

Just jealousy toward a baby.

Two weeks later:

She ruins everything.

Then, three days before I caught Vanessa hurting Sophie:

Maria saw the bruise.

Need to deal with her.

The pattern was undeniable.

Whatever Vanessa originally intended when she entered my life, her resentment had become abuse.

The financial grievance explained how she arrived.

It did not excuse what she chose once she was there.

Then we found the missing piece.

A small encrypted drive inside Leonard’s box.

Shaw provided the password from Vanessa’s instructions.

It contained copied mansion footage.

Not just the living room.

Vanessa had downloaded recordings from multiple cameras.

One video showed her entering my study and photographing Sophie’s trust.

Another showed her rehearsing a conversation alone before meeting my mother.

And one showed something we had not known happened.

Vanessa stood in the kitchen with a bottle of Sophie’s medication in her hand.

She opened it.

Looked toward the hallway.

May you like

Then poured part of it into the sink.

📖 The new footage raised the most frightening question yet, and this time I needed doctors—not assumptions—to determine whether Sophie had been medically endangered. 👇
