Chapter 16 - THE FAILED DEAL
Gregory Shaw agreed to meet through his attorney.
He did not suddenly become cooperative out of conscience.
He became cooperative because the attempt to influence Maria had exposed him.
“I was hired for asset recovery,” he said.
“By Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Eight months ago.”
Three months after Vanessa started dating me.
“What assets?”
“Documents and recordings she believed belonged to her father.”
“Inside my house?”
Shaw looked at his attorney.
The attorney nodded.
“She asked me how to identify and preserve materials she believed had been wrongfully retained.”
Daniel almost smiled at the careful wording.
“Did you tell her to enter Richard’s private files?”
“No.”
“Did you help her access Sterling systems?”
“No.”
“Did you offer Maria fifty thousand dollars?”
Shaw’s jaw tightened.
“I offered compensation for a truthful clarification.”
Maria had already provided us the card and her account.
Shaw’s euphemism did not improve it.
Then I asked about Sophie.
“Did Vanessa tell you she was hurting my daughter?”
“No.”
“Did you know?”
“No.”
“Why did you yell about her?”
His face changed.
The storage manager’s account had reached him.
“Vanessa told me the incident was accidental.”
“You believed her?”
“At first.”
“What changed?”
“She showed me a video.”
My pulse jumped.
“What video?”
“From the living room.”
Vanessa had copied footage before deleting the camera from the account.
“Which part?”
“The day you came home.”
“Did it show the kick?”
“Yes.”
Silence.
“Then why keep helping her?”
“I stopped.”
“After emptying the storage unit.”
“I told her I was done afterward.”
“Where are the boxes?”
“I don't know.”
I did not believe him.
Then his attorney interrupted.
“Mr. Shaw is willing to provide the communications establishing the scope of his engagement pursuant to an appropriate agreement.”
That was lawyer language for leverage.
Daniel handled it.
The messages eventually revealed something important.
Vanessa had hired Shaw to locate documents supporting Leonard’s claim.
She repeatedly instructed him not to involve Sophie.
Months later, her messages changed.
Sophie became “the obstacle.”
One message read:
Once Richard marries me, he'll finally fix the trust.
Another:
His mother will fold. She always does.
Vanessa expected marriage to give her influence.
When influence failed, resentment intensified.
But there was still no message ordering violence.
The abuse appeared personal.
Not part of Shaw’s plan.
That made it uglier, not better.
Then Shaw produced the last message Vanessa sent him after leaving the mansion.
DELETE EVERYTHING ABOUT THE CHILD.
He had not.
Daniel looked at me.
“That establishes consciousness of the footage.”
It was powerful.
But our plan to recover Leonard’s boxes had failed.
They were gone.
The independent review was expanding.
The board was nervous.
Vanessa still had copies of unknown recordings.
For the first time since this began, we had more truth but less control.
Then my mother called.
“Richard, Vanessa is here.”
I stood immediately.
“Where?”
“At my building.”
“What does she want?”
