Chapter 6 - LEONARD VALE

Thomas Keene arrived at the hotel before noon carrying a battered leather folder.
I did not invite him to sit until he told me everything.
“Leonard Vale was your father’s outside development consultant from 2008 through 2016.”
“That includes Hartford.”
“Yes.”
“Was there a bribe?”
Thomas removed his glasses.
“There was an allegation.”
“That isn't an answer.”
“It was investigated internally. Your father denied authorizing anything illegal. Leonard handled local consultants and reimbursements. We found irregular invoices.”
“Whose?”
“Leonard’s.”
Thomas opened the folder.
Copies of old expense reports filled it.
Three consulting payments totaling $480,000 had gone through an entity called Vale Strategic Partners.
“Why wasn't this prosecuted?”
“We couldn't prove where the money went. Leonard resigned. Your father chose not to sue because the publicity would have damaged the project.”
“So Vanessa’s recording?”
“Could be selectively edited. Leonard recorded meetings constantly.”
Daniel studied the documents.
“Why keep these?”
“Because after your father died, Leonard contacted me.”
Thomas slid another page across the table.
An email.
Leonard demanded $2 million from Sterling Group in exchange for “historic materials.”
My mother had never mentioned it.
“Did we pay?”
“No.”
“Then what happened?”
“Your mother’s counsel threatened litigation. Leonard disappeared.”
Four years later Vanessa entered my life.
Not through business.
Not through Sterling Group.
Through a charity auction where she knew exactly who I was.
I opened the background report my private security team had performed before our engagement.
Leonard Vale was listed as deceased in 2006.
A public-record search Daniel ordered showed the death certificate belonged to Leonard James Vale of Nevada.
Different middle name.
Different birth date.
Someone had given our investigator a false lead.
I felt embarrassed by how effectively I had been handled.
Vanessa had never demanded money from me.
She had never asked for a board position.
She seemed almost uncomfortable discussing Sterling Group.
That had made her feel safe.
Now it looked deliberate.
Daniel asked the obvious question.
“What does she gain by marrying you?”
I knew my estate structure.
Marriage alone would not transfer control of Sterling Group.
My trust protected Sophie.
The prenuptial agreement protected most premarital assets.
Unless Vanessa expected those arrangements to change.
I searched our recent messages.
Three weeks earlier, Vanessa had sent me contact information for an estate-planning attorney.
JUST THINKING AHEAD FOR WHEN WE HAVE OUR OWN BABY.
Our own.
I had read it as excitement.
Now the phrase felt different.
Thomas watched my face.
“There’s something else.”
He handed me a photograph.
My father stood outside Sterling headquarters beside Leonard Vale.
A teenage girl stood between them.
Vanessa.
She looked directly into the camera.
She had been inside my family’s world years before she pretended to meet me.
On the back, my father had written:
LEONARD + VANESSA — FAMILY DAY, 2011.
Vanessa had not merely researched me.
She had known my father.

And I had no idea why she had spent eleven months pretending otherwise.
📖 I returned to the mansion for documents, but Vanessa had already begun her counterattack—and this time she was targeting my right to protect Sophie. 👇
