Chapter 1 - The Word That Shattered the Room

“STOP PRETENDING YOU DON’T KNOW ME, DAD!”

Daniel Bennett froze.

His hands dropped away from the ten-year-old boy standing in the middle of his living room.

Claire almost forgot how to breathe.

Dad.

The word seemed impossible.

Five seconds earlier, Daniel had been furious.

He and Claire had walked through their front door just in time to see the boy, Ryan Cole, lash out near their five-month-old daughter.

Claire had screamed Lily’s name and rushed forward.

Now she sat on the floor with Lily pressed tightly against her chest, checking her baby frantically while Lily wailed against her shoulder.

Daniel had torn the brick from Ryan’s hands.

“What the hell are you doing?!”

Then Ryan had looked straight at him.

Not with confusion.

Recognition.

“Stop pretending you don’t know me, Dad!”

Claire slowly lifted her head.

“What?”

Daniel’s face drained of color.

Ryan pointed at him.

“You promised you wouldn’t leave me again!”

“Daniel?”

Claire’s voice barely came out.

Her husband stared at Ryan as though a ghost had walked into their home.

Claire tightened her arms around Lily.

“Why did that boy call you Dad?”

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing.

That silence frightened Claire more than any answer could have.

Because Daniel didn’t say Ryan was mistaken.

He didn’t ask who Ryan was.

He didn’t deny knowing him.

Ryan suddenly reached into his hoodie pocket.

He pulled out a worn photograph.

“Tell her.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Ryan, don’t.”

Claire went completely still.

He knew the boy’s name.

Ryan threw the photograph toward him.

It landed on the hardwood floor.

Claire saw Daniel in it.

Younger.

Smiling.

Beside him stood a brunette woman Claire had never seen.

In front of them was a little boy.

Ryan.

Claire looked at the date written beneath the photograph.

Three years ago.

She and Daniel had already been married.

Claire stared at him.

“What is this?”

Ryan wiped his tears angrily.

“My mom took it.”

“Who is your mother?”

Ryan’s face crumpled.

“Megan Cole.”

Daniel shut his eyes.

That reaction told Claire the name mattered.

Then Ryan whispered:

“She died twelve days ago.”

Daniel’s eyes snapped open.

“What?”

“She kept saying you’d come.”

Ryan’s anger returned.

“But you never did.”

Sirens approached outside.

Claire looked from Ryan to Daniel.

And suddenly she understood something terrifying.

Whatever had happened in their living room tonight had not begun tonight.

It had begun years earlier.

And her husband knew exactly where.
