Chapter 10 - Lily Asked the Question Nobody Could Avoid
Lily healed physically.
Emotionally took longer.
She became frightened by loud knocks.
She cried when unfamiliar people stood near the front door.
Claire found a child therapist.
Nothing was rushed.
Daniel followed every recommendation.
He visited only when Lily wanted him.
One afternoon, Claire held Lily on the couch while Daniel sat across from them.
Lily had recently started responding to familiar voices and expressions with bright smiles again, and Claire treasured every one.
Daniel reached toward her.
Lily hesitated.
Then grabbed his finger.
Daniel’s eyes filled.
Claire watched without speaking.
Their daughter was too young to understand Ryan.
But Claire understood something painful.
One day, Lily would ask.
Why did my brother hurt me?
Why didn’t Daddy know what to do?
Why did Grandma lie?
Claire wanted answers she could someday give without shame.
Meanwhile, Ryan began intensive therapy.
He faced juvenile consequences appropriate to his age and the attack.
Rebecca never excused his behavior.
Neither did Claire.
But they refused to treat a grieving ten-year-old like a monster beyond saving.
Ryan wrote Lily a letter.
He knew she couldn’t read it yet.
He asked Claire to keep it.
I was angry at Dad and hurt you.
That was wrong.
You were a baby.
You didn’t do anything to me.
I’m sorry.
Claire cried after reading it.
Ryan had managed in four sentences to do what Evelyn still could not.
Accept responsibility.
No excuses.
Claire placed the letter in a box for Lily to read someday.
Daniel later asked:
“Can I read it?”
Claire handed it to him.
He finished.
Then cried quietly.
“He’s ten.”
“Yes.”
“And he already understands accountability better than I did.”
Claire said nothing.
Daniel folded the letter carefully.
“I’m sorry.”
Claire looked at him.
“I know.”
“I love you.”
“I know.”
He looked surprised.
Claire continued.
“But love doesn’t erase betrayal.”
His eyes fell.
“I know that too.”
Then Michelle called.
The Bennett board had voted.
Evelyn was permanently removed from leadership.
Her voting control was suspended pending legal proceedings.
The empire she had protected by destroying relationships was no longer hers to command.
But she wasn’t finished.
She requested one private meeting with Claire.
Michelle asked why.
Evelyn’s attorney answered:
“She says she wants to make a deal.”
Claire frowned.
“What could she possibly still have?”
