Chapter 7 - The Eight-Million-Dollar Reason

Nathan Pierce had worked as a private medical consultant for the Bennett family.
Ten years earlier, Evelyn approached him about paternity testing.
Weeks later, she showed him a document stating Daniel was not Ryan’s father.
Nathan immediately noticed inconsistencies.
“The lab never produced it,” he told Claire.
Daniel sat beside her, listening.
Nathan continued.
“I confronted Evelyn.”
“What did she say?”
“That the matter was handled.”
“Did you report it?”
“I warned her I wanted no involvement.”
Within days, Nathan lost every Bennett contract.
He kept emails because he feared Evelyn might later blame him.
Nathan forwarded them.
One email changed everything.
Claire read it aloud.
“The boy cannot be legally recognized. William’s trust makes that impossible for us. Daniel believes the report. Keep it that way.”
Daniel frowned.
“My grandfather’s trust?”
Claire turned toward him.
“You don’t know?”
“No.”
Claire shook her head.
For a man born into millions, Daniel knew remarkably little about the machinery controlling his life.
Their attorney obtained the trust documents.
Daniel’s grandfather, William Bennett, had established a separate share for any biological child Daniel had before age thirty.
If Ryan was Daniel’s son, he had rights to part of the trust.
“How much?” Claire asked.
The attorney hesitated.
“At current valuation, roughly eight million dollars.”
Rebecca stared at her.
Daniel whispered:
“My mother did this over money.”
Claire corrected him.
“Control.”
Daniel looked at her.
“She wanted control over the money.”
“And over you.”
He didn’t argue.
A new independent DNA test was arranged.
Daniel volunteered immediately.
This time, Claire noticed.
No hesitation.
No mother making the decision.
But it didn’t erase the past.
While they waited for results, Evelyn fought back.
She challenged Rebecca’s authority over Megan’s estate.
She claimed Ryan’s behavior proved Rebecca’s home was unstable.
She portrayed Megan as manipulative.
Rebecca was furious.
“She’s attacking my dead sister.”
Claire looked at the petition.
“No.”
“What?”
“She’s afraid.”
Claire pointed to the filing.
“Every time Evelyn gets close to losing control, she attacks whoever has the evidence.”
The DNA results arrived six days later.
Daniel sat across from Claire.
Rebecca held the envelope.
She opened it.
Her eyes filled immediately.
“Probability of paternity…”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“99.99 percent.”
Nobody spoke.
Ryan Cole was Daniel Bennett’s biological son.
Legally.
Scientifically.
Finally.
Daniel covered his face.
“I lost ten years.”
Rebecca’s reply was quiet.
“Ryan lost them first.”
Daniel slowly lowered his hands.
“You’re right.”
Then the door opened.
Evelyn stood there.
May you like
She had heard enough.
👉 For ten years Evelyn had prevented one test from happening—and now the result she feared would cost her far more than money.
