Chapter 5 - Daniel’s Promise to Megan

“I should’ve come sooner.”

Daniel’s recorded voice filled the study.

Megan answered:

“You should tell Claire.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Daniel stood beside her.

Pale.

The recording continued.

“I will.”

“When?”

“I need time.”

“You’ve had years.”

“Megan…”

“Ryan thinks you’re coming back.”

“I am.”

“You said that last month.”

“I mean it this time.”

Claire hit PAUSE.

Silence.

Daniel whispered:

“Claire…”

She raised one hand.

“No.”

“I can explain.”

“You already did.”

His eyes filled.

“No, I—”

“You knew enough to promise Megan you’d tell me.”

Daniel looked down.

“You chose not to.”

“I was scared.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Megan was raising a child alone.”

Rebecca turned toward him.

“My sister spent years waiting for you to stop being scared.”

Daniel looked at her.

Rebecca’s eyes filled.

“And when she got sick, she tried one last time.”

Daniel froze.

“Sick?”

Rebecca stared.

“You didn’t know?”

“No.”

“Megan had cancer.”

Daniel staggered backward.

Claire watched shock move across his face.

“She was diagnosed eight months ago.”

Daniel’s mouth opened.

“She never told me.”

“She wrote to you.”

“I didn’t get anything.”

“She sent a certified letter to your office.”

Daniel turned slowly toward Evelyn.

His mother’s jaw tightened.

“Mom?”

Evelyn looked away.

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“What did you do?”

“I protected you.”

Daniel went completely still.

Rebecca whispered:

“She knew Megan was dying.”

“No.”

Evelyn’s patience snapped.

“There was nothing you could have done!”

Daniel stared at her.

“I could’ve gone to Ryan.”

“You had Lily!”

Claire stepped forward.

“Don’t use my daughter.”

Evelyn turned.

“You had a newborn family to protect.”

“No.”

Claire’s voice became cold.

“You had a secret to protect.”

Evelyn scoffed.

“That boy walked into your home and endangered your baby. And you’re defending him?”

“I’m not defending what Ryan did.”

Claire moved closer.

“I’m asking what you did before he got here.”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

Claire remembered Ryan’s words.

My mom said he’d come.

Then another thought hit her.

“Did you contact Ryan after Megan died?”

Evelyn didn’t answer.

Daniel stared at his mother.

“Did you?”

Her silence said enough.

Rebecca whispered:

“Oh my God.”

Claire felt a terrible possibility forming.

Ryan had lost his mother.

Daniel hadn’t answered him.

And somehow Evelyn had reached him first.

👉 Claire finally realized Ryan’s rage may not have grown on its own—someone had spoken to the grieving ten-year-old before he came to the Bennett house.
