Chapter 3 - Thirty-Seven Letters

Rebecca Cole placed the cardboard box on her kitchen table.
“Everything Megan kept.”
Claire sat across from her.
Ryan was staying temporarily with another relative under supervision while authorities determined what would happen next.
Claire had mixed feelings even hearing his name.
He had terrified her.
He had endangered Lily.
But he was also ten years old.
And his mother had just died.
Rebecca opened the box.
She placed thirty-seven envelopes on the table.
All addressed to Daniel Bennett.
Many had been stamped RETURN TO SENDER.
Claire picked one up.
Her stomach tightened.
She recognized the handwriting.
Evelyn Bennett.
Daniel’s mother.
Claire opened a letter dated nearly nine years earlier.
Megan had written about Ryan taking his first steps.
She wrote that she didn’t want Bennett money.
She wanted Daniel to know his child.
Another letter mentioned Ryan’s first word.
Another his first day of preschool.
Another his fifth birthday.
Again and again, Megan begged Daniel to contact her directly.
Claire looked up.
“Daniel says a paternity test excluded him.”
Rebecca laughed bitterly.
“That test was fake.”
Claire stared at her.
“What?”
Rebecca removed a document from another folder.
It came from the laboratory whose name appeared on Daniel’s alleged paternity report.
The lab had searched its archived records.
No completed test matching the document existed.
Claire read it twice.
“So who created Daniel’s report?”
Rebecca shook her head.
“Megan spent years trying to prove that.”
“Why didn’t she go to court?”
“She tried.”
Rebecca’s jaw tightened.
“Then Evelyn’s lawyers started calling.”
“What did they threaten?”
“Legal costs. Custody fights. Defamation.”
Rebecca leaned forward.
“My sister was twenty-five. She worked two jobs. She got scared.”
Claire looked at all the returned letters.
Then Rebecca handed her a photograph.
Ryan’s seventh birthday.
Daniel was crouching beside him holding a baseball glove.
Claire recognized the picture from her living room.
“He told me Megan found him at his office.”
Rebecca frowned.
“That isn’t what happened.”
Claire went still.
“Daniel found her.”
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
Rebecca explained that Daniel had begun doubting the original paternity result.
He tracked Megan down himself.
He secretly started seeing Ryan.
“He told Megan he was going to tell you.”
Claire swallowed.
“He never did.”
“No.”
“And then he disappeared again?”
Rebecca nodded.
“Right after Evelyn found out.”
Claire shut her eyes.
Then Rebecca removed one last envelope.
On the front:
FOR CLAIRE BENNETT.
Claire stared at her own name.
“When did Megan write this?”
“Six months ago.”
Claire reached for it.
Rebecca stopped her.
“There’s something else.”
Her phone vibrated.
A security notification appeared.
Megan had kept a small storage unit.
Someone had just entered it using an old access code.
Rebecca opened the camera image.
A woman in a cream coat stood among Megan’s boxes.
Claire recognized her instantly.
Evelyn Bennett.
