Chapter 13 - The Day Ryan Met Lily Again
Nearly a year after the attack, Claire agreed to a carefully supervised meeting.
Lily was now a toddler.
She did not consciously remember the details of that terrible day.
But Claire remembered enough for both of them.
Ryan entered the therapist’s family room slowly.
He had grown taller.
His anger had softened.
Rebecca stood behind him.
Daniel waited outside.
Claire had insisted.
This meeting belonged to the children.
Ryan stopped several feet from Lily.
She was sitting on the floor with wooden blocks.
Lily looked up.
Ryan froze.
Claire could see how frightened he was.
Not of Lily.
Of himself.
“Hi,” he whispered.
Lily stared.
Then held up a block.
Ryan looked at Claire.
“Can I?”
Claire glanced at the therapist.
She nodded.
Ryan sat several feet away.
Lily pushed one block toward him.
Ryan picked it up.
His eyes filled.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
Lily obviously couldn’t understand the full meaning.
But Claire could.
Ryan continued softly.
“You didn’t do anything.”
Claire felt tears rise.
“I was mad at Dad.”
His voice cracked.
“And I took it out on you.”
Rebecca covered her mouth.
Ryan looked at Claire.
“I know saying sorry doesn’t fix it.”
Claire nodded.
“You’re right.”
“But I’m still sorry.”
Claire swallowed.
“Thank you for saying it.”
Lily crawled toward another toy.
Ryan stayed where he was.
He didn’t reach for her.
Didn’t assume he had earned closeness.
That mattered.
After twenty minutes, Claire ended the visit.
Ryan stood.
“Can I see her again sometime?”
Claire answered honestly.
“Maybe.”
Ryan nodded.
“Okay.”
Outside, Daniel waited.
Ryan walked past him.
Then stopped.
“Dad?”
Daniel’s entire body changed at the word.
Ryan had never used it calmly before.
“Yes?”
“I told her.”
Daniel nodded.
“I know.”
Ryan looked at him.
“You don’t get credit.”
Daniel smiled faintly through tears.
“I know that too.”
Claire heard it.
And something inside her loosened.
Not because Daniel had become perfect.
Because he finally seemed comfortable doing the right thing without needing applause.
A few months later, authorities resolved Evelyn’s case through a combination of civil penalties, restitution, restrictions, and criminal consequences related to the documented misconduct.
She lost control of the company permanently.
Ryan’s inheritance remained protected.
Megan’s name was publicly cleared.
And Bennett Development issued a statement acknowledging that earlier claims surrounding Ryan’s paternity relied on fraudulent documentation.
Rebecca framed the statement beside Megan’s photograph.
“She should’ve been alive to see this,” Daniel said.
Rebecca looked at him.
“Yes.”
Daniel lowered his head.
