“Eight million dollars?”
Evelyn stared at the DNA report.
“You’re handing that boy eight million dollars?”
Daniel stood.
“It isn’t mine to hand him.”
“He attacked Lily!”
“And he will face consequences.”
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“But he’s my son.”
Evelyn recoiled.
Claire noticed it.
Not because Ryan had hurt Lily.
Because Daniel had finally said the words aloud.
My son.
Evelyn pointed at Claire.
“She’s turning you against your family.”
Claire almost laughed.
Daniel didn’t.
“Claire didn’t forge a paternity report.”
Evelyn went still.
“She didn’t return Megan’s letters.”
“Daniel—”
“She didn’t intercept correspondence.”
“I protected you.”
“No.”
His voice became quiet.
“You protected the version of my life you could control.”
Evelyn stared at him.
Daniel continued.
“And I let you.”
Claire looked over.
That mattered.
He finally said it without making Evelyn responsible for everything.
“I was a coward.”
Evelyn’s face twisted.
“After everything I did for you?”
“You stole ten years from my child.”
“I saved your future.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Ryan was part of my future.”
Evelyn slapped him.
The room went silent.
Daniel didn’t react.
He simply looked at her.
“You’re done.”
“What?”
“You will never contact Ryan alone again.”
“I am his grandmother.”
“You used his grief to turn him against a baby.”
Evelyn’s expression cracked.
Claire’s stomach tightened.
That was as close as anyone had come to saying it plainly.
Daniel continued.
“You will not contact Lily.”
“Daniel.”
“You will not come to Claire’s house.”
Evelyn laughed.
“You think she’ll stay with you?”
Daniel looked toward Claire.
Pain crossed his face.
“I don’t know.”
Then he looked back at his mother.
“And that’s my consequence.”
Evelyn had no response.
Later, Claire discovered the trust issue was even bigger than they knew.
Daniel’s grandfather had signed a second amendment before he died.
But the original could not be found.
The family attorney remembered seeing it.
Evelyn claimed it never existed.
Then Caroline Webb, Daniel’s former assistant, came forward.
She had another confession.
Evelyn had instructed her to intercept Megan’s final certified letter.
Caroline had refused to destroy it.
She still had the original.
Attached was a handwritten note from Evelyn:
DANIEL NEVER SEES THIS.
Daniel read it.
Then he sat down and cried.
Megan had written:
I’m dying. Please don’t let Ryan lose both parents at once.
Daniel whispered:
“I could have gone.”
Rebecca stared at him.
“Yes.”
“I could’ve been there.”
“Yes.”
Claire remained silent.
This grief belonged to him.
Then Caroline added:
“There’s one more thing.”
Everyone looked at her.
