Chapter 6 - What Evelyn Told Ryan

Ryan sat across from Claire with his aunt and a child therapist nearby.

His anger was gone.

He looked exhausted.

Claire kept her voice steady.

“How is Lily?” Ryan asked.

“She’s recovering.”

Ryan stared at his shoes.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire didn’t rush to comfort him.

“What you did was very wrong.”

“I know.”

“You could have seriously hurt her.”

Ryan’s eyes filled.

“I know.”

Claire waited.

Then asked:

“Why Lily?”

Ryan wiped his face.

“Because she got everything.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“Who told you that?”

Silence.

“Ryan.”

“Grandma Bennett.”

Rebecca inhaled sharply.

“When did she call you?”

“The day after Mom died.”

Daniel’s mother had somehow obtained Ryan’s number.

Ryan had called Daniel first.

Three times.

No answer.

He left voicemails.

Then Evelyn called him.

“She said Dad wasn’t coming.”

Claire swallowed.

“What else?”

“She said he had a real family now.”

Rebecca closed her eyes.

Ryan continued.

“She said Lily was the baby he actually wanted.”

Claire’s entire body went cold.

“She said Mom should’ve stopped trying to ruin his life.”

Ryan started sobbing.

“I was so mad.”

Claire understood.

Not excused.

Understood.

“And you decided Lily was responsible.”

Ryan nodded shamefully.

“I know she wasn’t.”

Claire leaned forward.

“Remember that feeling.”

Ryan looked up.

“Because whenever you’re angry in the future, you need to remember that hurting an innocent person doesn’t punish the person who hurt you.”

Ryan nodded.

Before Claire left, he removed a tiny key hanging on a cord beneath his hoodie.

“Mom told me to give this to Aunt Rebecca if Grandma ever took the red file.”

Rebecca stared.

“A bank key.”

The safe-deposit box contained three items.

Megan’s will.

A sealed envelope for Ryan.

And one addressed to Claire.

Claire opened hers.

Megan had written:

Claire, I’m sorry you’re discovering my son through pain instead of truth.

She explained Daniel’s secret visits.

His promises.

His disappearance.

Then came a name.

Dr. Nathan Pierce.

Megan wrote:

Nathan knows the paternity report was fabricated. Evelyn told Daniel he disappeared. He didn’t.

Below was an Arizona address.

Rebecca found him within two days.

Nathan answered Claire’s call.

When she explained why she was calling, he became silent.

Then said:

“I kept the emails.”

Claire gripped her phone.

“What emails?”

May you like

“The ones Evelyn Bennett hoped nobody would ever see.”

👉 Megan had left behind the one witness Evelyn couldn’t intimidate forever—and he had saved written proof of why Ryan’s existence had to be erased.
