Chapter 11 - Ryan’s Apology

Ryan refused to see Daniel.
I understood.
He did ask to see Lily.
Every protective instinct in me screamed no.
But Lily’s therapist believed a carefully supervised meeting might help both children—if Lily wanted it.
I asked her.
She became very quiet.
“Will he have a brick?”
My heart broke.
“No.”
“Can you stay?”
“I won’t leave your side.”
The meeting took place in a therapist’s office.
Ryan sat on one end of a couch.
Lily sat beside me.
He couldn’t look at her.
Finally he whispered:
“I’m sorry.”
Lily said nothing.
Ryan started crying.
Not loud.
Just silent tears sliding down his cheeks.
“She said Dad would love me if I proved I wasn’t scared of you.”
Lily looked confused.
“I didn’t take your dad.”
Ryan shook his head.
“I know.”
“You hurt me.”
“I know.”
There was no magical forgiveness.
No hug.
No instant healing.
And I was grateful for that.
Some wounds deserve honesty more than a perfect movie moment.
Ryan reached into his pocket and gave the therapist a folded piece of paper.
It was a drawing.
Two houses.
One for Lily.
One for Ryan.
Between them, he had drawn a fence with an open gate.
“I don’t want to live at her house,” Ryan said. “I just don’t want her to be scared of me forever.”
Lily studied the drawing.
Then she said:
“I’m still scared.”
Ryan nodded.
“Okay.”
That “okay” was the first mature thing any Bennett man had said in months.
Outside, Jenna hugged me.
“Thank you.”
“Don’t thank me yet. Healing is going to take time.”
“I know.”
Then Jenna handed me a letter.
Daniel had written it to Ryan but had agreed not to send it unless Jenna approved.
At the bottom were five words:
I failed you before Vanessa did.
May you like
For the first time, Daniel had told the truth without trying to protect himself.
👉 Ryan had begun facing what he had done—but Daniel still owed both children the one thing he had withheld from everyone: complete honesty.
