Chapter 12 - Daniel Finally Confessed

Daniel’s supervised meeting happened two weeks later.

Ryan came with Jenna.

Lily came with me.

Daniel looked older than forty.

He didn’t reach for either child.

He simply sat down.

“I lied to all of you.”

No excuses.

He looked at Ryan first.

“I was ashamed of what I had done to your mother, and I was afraid Claire would leave me. Then the company deal gave me another excuse to wait. Every time I said ‘later,’ I made you feel like you were the secret.”

Ryan stared at the floor.

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“Vanessa used that because I created it.”

Then he looked at Lily.

“I never told Ryan to hurt you.”

Lily moved closer to me.

“But I brought Vanessa into our lives. I ignored warning signs because I didn’t want my lies exposed. So even though I didn’t tell him to do it, I failed to protect you.”

Lily asked the simplest question.

“Why did you lie to Mommy?”

Daniel cried.

“Because I was selfish.”

There was no better answer.

He turned to me.

“I’m sorry.”

I didn’t say I forgave him.

Because I didn’t.

“I believe you didn’t order the attack,” I said.

His shoulders shook.

“But that doesn’t repair our marriage.”

“I know.”

“And it doesn’t erase Sarah.”

“I know.”

“And it doesn’t make Ryan responsible for carrying your shame.”

Daniel nodded.

“I know.”

That was the closest thing we would ever have to closure as husband and wife.

Three days later, I filed for divorce.

Daniel did not contest it.

He signed over the house.

Agreed to supervised visitation until Lily’s therapist recommended otherwise.

And formally acknowledged Ryan as his son.

For the first time in ten years, Ryan Bennett-Cole no longer existed in someone else’s shadow.

But Vanessa still believed she could escape the worst consequences.

Her attorney argued that she had never physically touched Lily.

Then prosecutors found the final piece of evidence.

A receipt.
