Chapter 2 - The Boy My Husband Knew

Lily needed stitches and observation for a concussion.
The doctor told me she was lucky.
I nearly broke when I heard that word.
Lucky.
My five-year-old had been attacked inside her own home, and somehow I was supposed to feel lucky.
Daniel arrived at the hospital forty minutes later.
Alone.
“Where’s Ryan?”
“With his aunt. The police contacted her.”
“You knew his name before anyone told you.”
Daniel stopped.
I watched his throat move.
“Claire—”
“Who is Ryan Cole?”
His eyes flicked toward Lily’s room.
“Not here.”
I almost laughed.
“You lost the right to choose where we have this conversation.”
He rubbed both hands over his face.
Then he finally said it.
“Ryan is my son.”
I heard the words.
But for several seconds, my mind refused to arrange them into meaning.
“Your what?”
“I didn’t know until a few years ago.”
Ryan was ten.
Lily was five.
Daniel and I had been together twelve years.
He must have read the calculation on my face.
“His mother and I were together before you and I became serious.”
“Were you?”
Daniel looked away.
That was answer enough.
I felt humiliation burn through me.
“How long have you been seeing him?”
“About eighteen months.”
“And you never told me?”
“I was trying to figure out how.”
“For eighteen months?”
He reached toward me.
I stepped back.
Then I asked the question that mattered more than his betrayal.
“Did you tell him to hurt Lily?”
“No.”
His answer came instantly.
Too instantly.
“I swear to you, Claire. I would never hurt our daughter.”
“Then why did he say you did?”
“I don’t know.”
The door opened.
A detective entered carrying a clear evidence bag.
Inside was a cheap black cellphone.
Ryan’s phone.
“We found something,” she said.
Daniel froze.
The detective looked at him.
“Mr. Bennett, does this number belong to you?”
She turned the screen toward us.
Daniel stared at it.
Then sat down.
May you like
Because the number absolutely belonged to him.
👉 The phone proved Ryan had been receiving messages from Daniel’s number—but it still didn’t prove who had actually written them.
