Chapter 7 - The Custody Threat

Daniel’s attorney moved fast.
He argued Daniel had been deceived by Vanessa too.
He had cooperated with investigators.
He loved Lily.
And legally, all of those things mattered.
Emotionally, none of them changed what my daughter now did every time someone knocked on the door.
She hid.
Lily stopped sleeping alone.
She screamed when she saw a red brick near a construction site.
Worst of all, she asked me one night:
“Does Daddy love the boy more than me?”
I turned away so she wouldn’t see me cry.
“Daddy’s mistakes are grown-up mistakes. None of them happened because of you.”
“But Ryan said Daddy chose him.”
“No one gets to make you compete for love.”
I didn’t realize Daniel was standing outside the bedroom until I stepped into the hallway.
He was crying silently.
For once, I didn’t comfort him.
The temporary custody hearing came three weeks later.
Daniel’s lawyer painted him as flawed but devoted.
Then my attorney asked one question.
“Mr. Bennett, when did you first learn Vanessa Hart had privately contacted your ten-year-old son?”
Daniel hesitated.
My stomach dropped.
He knew something.
“Two months before the attack.”
The courtroom went silent.
I stared at him.
He had never told me that.
My attorney continued.
“And what did Ms. Hart say to Ryan?”
Daniel swallowed.
“She told him he deserved to live with me.”
“Did that concern you?”
“Yes.”
“Did you stop seeing Ms. Hart?”
“No.”
There it was.
The betrayal beneath the betrayal.
Daniel had seen the warning.
And chose secrecy anyway.
The judge ordered supervised visitation only.
Daniel looked shattered.
I felt no victory.
Only exhaustion.
Outside the courthouse, Vanessa was waiting near the steps.
She wasn’t supposed to approach us.
But as I passed, she smiled.
“You think you won?”
I stopped.
She lowered her voice.
“Ask Daniel why he was really hiding Ryan.”
Before I could answer, her attorney pulled her away.
That night I called Jenna.
“Was there something Daniel never told me about Ryan?”
Jenna went quiet.
Then she said:

“Claire… you need to see Sarah’s will.”
👉 Daniel’s secret son had never been only about infidelity—and Sarah Cole’s will contained the reason Daniel had been terrified of Ryan becoming public.
