Chapter 6 - What Vanessa Wanted

Vanessa had spent months telling Ryan a story.
Claire hates you.
Lily replaced you.
Your father wants you, but he’s trapped.
Ryan believed her because Daniel had already given him every reason to feel hidden.
Meetings in parks.
Birthday gifts left with Jenna.
Phone calls Daniel ended whenever I entered the room.
Ryan had a father—but only in secret.
Vanessa turned that secrecy into poison.
Then Detective Marquez found the motive.
Daniel had told Vanessa he planned to end their affair.
Not because he suddenly developed a conscience.
Because Ryan’s existence was becoming harder to conceal, and Daniel feared I would discover everything at once.
According to messages recovered from Vanessa’s laptop, she had replied:
Then maybe Claire needs a reason to leave you first.
Daniel said he thought she meant exposing the affair.
Vanessa had meant something else.
She wanted our marriage destroyed.
She wanted me terrified of Daniel.
And she wanted Ryan emotionally dependent on her version of events.
But there was still a problem.
None of those messages directly instructed Ryan to attack Lily.
Vanessa could argue they were angry words.
Manipulative, yes.
Criminal conspiracy?
Harder.
Then Ryan remembered something.
“She borrowed Dad’s phone.”
Detective Marquez leaned closer.
“When?”
“At his office.”
“How do you know?”
“I called him. Vanessa answered.”
Daniel stared at Ryan.
“When was that?”
Ryan gave the date.
Daniel went pale again.
He had been in Chicago that day.
The secret phone was supposed to be locked in his office drawer.
Only three people knew the alarm code.
Daniel.
His assistant.
And Vanessa.
The detective obtained the building’s access records.
Vanessa had entered Daniel’s private office at 7:42 p.m.
She stayed twenty-three minutes.
During those same twenty-three minutes, Ryan received five messages from “Dad.”
The last one said:
If you want to be my son, you know what you have to do.
Vanessa’s smile disappeared at her next interview.
But she still wasn’t finished fighting.
Neither was Daniel.
Because he suddenly turned to me and said something I never expected.
“I’m filing for joint custody of Lily.”
I stared at him.
“You can’t be serious.”
“She’s my daughter too.”
I looked at the man whose lies had brought a predator directly into our family.
May you like
“No, Daniel. You don’t get to set the fire and then demand half of what survived.”
👉 Daniel might not have ordered the attack—but now he was about to learn that innocence of one crime did not erase years of betrayal.
