Chapter 4 - The Woman in the Photograph

Daniel didn’t deny knowing Vanessa.

That almost made it worse.

“She’s our company’s outside financial consultant.”

“At midnight?”

His face hardened.

“Claire—”

“At a hotel?”

Silence.

I held up the photograph.

“Try again.”

He sat down.

And eleven years of marriage collapsed in one sentence.

“I was having an affair.”

I felt strangely calm.

Maybe there is a point where pain becomes too large for the body to process.

“How long?”

“Four months.”

“Does she know about Ryan?”

Daniel hesitated.

There it was.

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

Vanessa knew about the son I didn’t know existed.

She knew about my marriage.

She knew about Lily.

And apparently, she knew about Daniel’s secret phone.

“Did she ever have access to that phone?”

“No.”

Then Daniel stopped.

I opened my eyes.

“What?”

“I kept it in the locked drawer in my office.”

“And Vanessa?”

“She worked from my office sometimes.”

For the first time since the attack, Daniel looked less guilty than frightened.

The next morning, Detective Marquez interviewed Ryan again.

His aunt, Jenna Cole, allowed me to be present through a one-way observation window.

Ryan looked tiny in that room.

Not like a monster.

Like a terrified child who had done something terrible because an adult had twisted something inside him.

“Your dad told you to hurt Lily?” the detective asked.

Ryan nodded.

“Did you hear his voice?”

“No.”

“Did you see him type the messages?”

Ryan shook his head.

“They came from our phone.”

“Our phone?”

“The one Dad gave me. Only him and me had the number.”

Then Ryan said something that made Detective Marquez lean forward.

“A lady told me Dad was scared Claire would find out about me.”

“What lady?”

Ryan swallowed.

“Vanessa.”

Daniel, standing beside me, went completely still.

Ryan continued.

“She said if I did what Dad asked, I could finally live with him.”

I turned toward my husband.

Daniel whispered one word.

May you like

“Oh, God.”

👉 Ryan had never actually heard Daniel give the order—and the one adult who had interpreted his “father’s wishes” was Daniel’s mistress.
