Chapter 9 - The Recording Sarah Saved
The warning wasn’t an email.
It was a recording.
Sarah had recorded a conversation with Vanessa at a coffee shop.
Vanessa’s voice was unmistakable.
“What happens to Ryan’s shares if Daniel becomes his legal guardian?”
Sarah answered cautiously.
“Why are you asking?”
“I handle financial planning for Daniel.”
“No. You handle company finances. Ryan is my son.”
Vanessa laughed softly.
“Everything becomes company business eventually.”
Then Sarah said:
“Stay away from him.”
The recording ended.
Detective Marquez listened twice.
“It proves motive and prior interest. Not the attack.”
But Vanessa was beginning to panic.
She contacted Ryan directly despite being ordered not to.
That mistake changed everything.
She sent him a message through an online gaming account.
Delete our chats. Tell them your dad spoke to you in person.
Ryan showed Jenna.
Jenna called police.
Vanessa was arrested for violating the no-contact order and witness tampering while investigators prepared broader charges.
I expected Daniel to look relieved.
Instead, he looked destroyed.
“She knew everything because I told her,” he admitted.
I stared at him across my attorney’s conference table.
“The company. Ryan. Sarah. The phone. Everything.”
“You gave the woman you were sleeping with every weapon she needed.”
“Yes.”
“And you still want custody?”
His eyes filled.
“I want to be Lily’s father.”
“Then start by understanding that being her father isn’t something you win in court. It’s something you failed to protect.”
Daniel lowered his head.
For once, he didn’t argue.
Then Detective Marquez called.
The forensic team had recovered cloud backups from the secret phone.
One draft message had never been sent.
It was written from Daniel’s phone while he was in Chicago.
Vanessa had typed:
Don’t just scare Lily. Make Claire believe Daniel wanted his daughter gone.
That single draft changed the investigation.
Vanessa hadn’t merely wanted Lily hurt.
She wanted Daniel blamed.
She wanted me to believe my husband had ordered an attack on our child.
