Chapter 3 - Messages From a Father

The detective didn’t let me read everything that night.
But she showed me enough.
Messages from a number Daniel admitted belonged to a prepaid phone he kept hidden from me.
You deserve your real family.
Claire doesn’t want you around.
Lily gets everything because Claire controls me.
Then came the message sent three hours before the attack.
Tomorrow. Be at the house at four.
Daniel whispered, “I didn’t send that.”
The detective didn’t react.
“Who had access to this phone?”
“No one.”
“That’s not a useful answer.”
Daniel looked cornered.
I stared at him.
“Why did you have a secret phone?”
He didn’t answer.
The detective did.
“Mr. Bennett says he used it to communicate with Ryan’s mother before her death and later with Ryan.”
Ryan’s mother was dead.
Another secret.
Another piece of my husband’s life I had never known existed.
Daniel reached for my hand.
I pulled away.
“Claire, I know how this looks.”
“No, Daniel. I don’t think you do.”
He lowered his voice.
“I hid Ryan because I was scared I’d lose you.”
“You hid a child because you were protecting yourself.”
His jaw tightened.
Then his regular phone buzzed.
He looked down.
Something changed in his face.
He immediately turned the screen away.
That tiny movement told me there was still more.
“Who is that?”
“Work.”
“Show me.”
“Claire.”
“Show me.”
He refused.
I walked away before I said something I couldn’t take back.
Later that night, while Lily slept, the detective called again.
They had recovered one deleted message from Ryan’s phone.
It had been sent from Daniel’s secret number.
The message read:
If you want me to finally choose you, prove you’re not afraid of her.
I sat in the dark hospital room staring at my sleeping daughter.
Then my phone vibrated.
An unknown number had sent me a photograph.
Daniel was standing outside a hotel.
His arm was around a brunette woman I had never seen before.
Under the picture were six words.
