Chapter 10 - THE RECORDER

Lucy had removed a small recorder taped beneath Claire’s body.
Rose instructed her to retrieve it if the funeral occurred.
Lucy hid it behind the framed photograph.
She kept it because Rose warned that even Grandpa might be compromised.
The recording captured Claire breathing weakly.
Arthur argued with Evelyn.
Vanessa demanded the trust code.
Vale said Claire needed a hospital.
Then Rose’s voice said:
“If Claire lives, none of you get the house.”
Lucy stared at her mother.
“Did you kill Aunt Claire?”
“No.”
“Did you leave her?”
Rose hesitated.
Then the damaged recording continued.
A man said, “Rose, move away from her.”
My voice.
I had never been there.
Voice analysis showed it was synthetic.
The original speaker was Robert Shaw—Eleanor’s brother, officially dead for fifteen years.
