Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN IN THE COFFIN
The police did not arrest me immediately. Arthur’s evidence was a letter that appeared to be written by Rose:
My father knows what he did. If anything happens to me, look at him first.
Lucy saw the flaw. Rose always crossed the number seven. The letter contained an uncrossed seven.
An independent autopsy was ordered.
The coffin was opened.
The woman inside wore Rose’s dress, wedding ring, and hair color, but her dental records belonged to Claire Dawson—Rose’s former college roommate.
DNA revealed Claire was Rose’s biological half sister.
My late wife, Eleanor, had hidden another daughter.
Arthur had arranged the private mortuary and used Claire’s body to obtain Rose’s death certificate. The certificate temporarily transferred control of the Bennett Family Education Trust to him.
The memory card showed Rose and Claire planning to expose him inside a church basement.
“If Arthur thinks one of us died,” Claire said, “he’ll move the money.”
Rose answered, “And Dad gets the key.”
Then a third woman entered the recording.
She had Rose’s face.
