Chapter 4 - LUCY’S KEY

Lucy would turn thirteen in nine days.

At thirteen, she would gain controlling authority over the lake property and investment fund. Until then, Rose remained trustee.

If Rose died, Arthur controlled the trust temporarily.

If Arthur publicly abandoned the girls, guardianship transferred to me and his authority was suspended.

Rose had designed the funeral confrontation to remove him.

But Claire’s real death turned the plan into a murder case.

Police searched Arthur’s SUV and found passports for the three girls under false surnames.

He planned to move them, not send them to foster care.

Vanessa Brooks, his fiancée, worked for Shaw Heritage Bank—the bank holding the girls’ safe-deposit boxes.

An alert arrived.

Box 17 had been opened.

Security footage showed Rose entering the vault alive.

Evelyn insisted Rose was injured elsewhere.

Someone wore Rose’s face.

Then April opened her funeral program and found a tiny note:

ASK RACHEL WHY SHE NEVER CRIES.

Rachel froze.
