Chapter 1 - The Boy in His Arms

“Six months ago, I took your son away,” Elijah gasped. “Now I’m begging you to save him.”

Rainwater ran from his black overcoat onto the emergency-room floor.

In his arms, four-year-old Toby hung limp.

The boy’s lips were turning blue.

I had imagined seeing Elijah again a thousand times.

In every version, I told him exactly what he had taken from me.

My career.

My home.

My reputation.

And most of all, my son.

But none of those words came.

I looked at Toby’s chest.

Barely moving.

“Trauma bay three,” I ordered. “Now.”

Elijah followed as nurses pulled the child onto a gurney.

Cassandra rushed in behind him wearing an ivory coat and diamond earrings.

She looked elegant even while pretending to panic.

“Naomi,” she said sharply. “You shouldn’t be treating him.”

I ignored her.

Toby’s pulse was weak.

His pupils were uneven.

There was a bruise beneath his left ear and a faint chemical smell on his breath.

Not alcohol.

Not cleaning fluid.

Something medicinal.

“Elijah, what happened?”

“He fell down the stairs.”

Cassandra answered before he could.

“He was playing near the landing. It was an accident.”

I looked at her.

She was hiding her phone beneath her coat.

Her thumb moved quickly across the screen.

Deleting something.

Toby’s oxygen level dropped.

We intubated him.

Elijah stood against the wall, helpless for the first time in his life.

Six months earlier, he had stood in a family courtroom while his attorneys called me unstable.

He had used altered psychiatric notes and false testimony to take my son, Noah, away from me.

The judge granted him temporary guardianship because Elijah was Noah’s biological father.

The affair that produced my son had happened before Elijah married Cassandra.

I had trusted him once.

He rewarded that trust by erasing me from my child’s life.

Now another little boy was dying in front of me.

And despite everything, I could not let hatred touch my hands.

Toby’s heart rhythm stabilized.

His eyelids fluttered.

I leaned closer.

His tiny fingers closed around mine.

“Mom,” he whispered.

The room froze.

I thought he was confused.

Then he looked directly at me.

“It wasn’t an accident.”

Cassandra dropped her phone.

The screen flashed once before going dark.

A message preview appeared.

MAKE SURE HE DOESN’T WAKE UP.

I slowly turned toward her.

“What are you hiding?”

👉 Toby had survived long enough to speak, but the deleted message on Cassandra’s phone suggested someone inside his own family wanted him dead.
