Chapter 11 - The Child With My Eyes

Federal agents traced the call to the Helix Crown.

The ship was still inside coastal jurisdiction for six more hours.

A boarding team was authorized.

I joined as medical support.

Elijah demanded to come.

I refused.

He had caused enough damage through entitlement disguised as protection.

Morales came with me.

The Coast Guard approached before dawn.

The Helix Crown looked like a luxury yacht.

White decks.

Glass walls.

No visible medical equipment.

Then agents opened the lower level.

Rows of locked treatment rooms stretched through the hull.

Children slept beneath monitors.

Some had identification bracelets.

Others had numbers.

My anger became something cold and precise.

This was not research.

It was a prison.

We found four missing children alive.

Two rooms were empty.

One belonged to Noah’s supposed sibling.

Patient N-2.

Female.

Age seven.

Genetic parent: Naomi Carter.

My hands went numb.

I had never been pregnant before Noah.

At least, not knowingly.

Then I remembered a procedure during medical school.

I donated eggs to help pay tuition.

The clinic claimed all embryos were destroyed after the recipient withdrew.

They lied.

Miriam obtained one.

A child had been born from my genetic material without my knowledge.

Her name was Ava.

We found her in a sealed isolation room.

She had dark curls.

My eyes.

My mother’s chin.

She watched me through the glass.

“Are you Naomi?”

“Yes.”

“Grandmother said you would come if Noah survived.”

The door required Miriam’s biometric code.

Morales forced the lock.

I entered slowly.

Ava did not hug me.

She had learned not to trust adults quickly.

I understood.

“Are you my mother?” she asked.

“Biologically, yes.”

“Do you want me?”

The question broke me.

I knelt.

“I did not know you existed.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

I looked into her eyes.

“Yes. I want you safe.”

She considered that.

Then she gave me a keycard.

“Grandmother is in the surgery deck.”

“Why did she leave you here?”

“She said I failed.”

“Failed what?”

“I would not hurt Noah.”

Ava explained that Miriam wanted her to help convince Noah to cooperate.

When Ava refused, Miriam isolated her.

We reached the surgery deck.

Adrian’s staff had fled.

One operating room remained active.

Miriam stood behind a glass partition.

Six children lay prepared for procedures.

She held a dead-man switch.

“If the door opens,” she said through the speaker, “the sedative pumps release fatal doses.”

Morales aimed through the glass.

“No clear shot.”

Miriam looked at me.

“You came for the children.”

“I came to end this.”

“You came because you understand sacrifice.”

“No. I understand consent.”

She smiled.

“Then choose.”

The monitor displayed two buttons.

One released the children.

The other unlocked the ship’s evidence archive.

Miriam had designed the system so saving the children would erase every record needed to prosecute the network.

👉 Naomi finally found Ava and the missing children, but Miriam forced her to choose between saving their lives and preserving the evidence that could destroy the entire organization.
