Chapter 9 - The Contract Behind My Son

Cain spoke through the lodge’s open window.
“Naomi was selected because of her genetics.”
I felt the world narrow.
My father had died from a rare marrow disorder.
I carried a mutation associated with unusually broad donor compatibility.
As a medical student, I volunteered for genetic research.
I believed the data was anonymous.
It was sold.
Elijah’s family foundation purchased access.
They wanted a child with my genetic profile.
A future universal donor.
Elijah looked at me through the glass.
“I didn’t know at first.”
“At first?”
He lowered his eyes.
“I was told to meet you.”
The room blurred.
Our first dinner.
The bookstore where he pretended to recognize the same novel.
The rainy walk.
The promises.
All arranged.
He admitted his father pressured him.
The Blackwood family had invested in private transplant medicine.
They believed a child born from our genetic combination could become medically valuable.
“Noah was conceived naturally,” Elijah said. “I fell in love with you.”
“You left me before he was born.”
“My father threatened you.”
“So you protected me by disappearing?”
“I was a coward.”
Cassandra laughed.
“You married me two years later.”
“I married you because our families wanted the merger.”
“And you kept watching Naomi.”
Elijah said nothing.
Cassandra’s humiliation turned dangerous.
She aimed at him.
“You used me.”
“You used Naomi’s son.”
“For Lily!”
“Lily was never dying.”
Cain stepped backward.
Cassandra looked at him.
“What?”
I held up Lily’s real medical report through the window.
“She is in remission.”
Cassandra stared.
“No.”
“Adrian falsified the results.”
“No.”
“He needed you desperate.”
Lily began crying.
“Mom, I told you I feel okay.”
Cassandra’s hand shook.
Everything she had justified collapsed.
The kidnapping.
The poisoning.
The forged custody case.
The hidden lab.
All built on a lie.
Cain moved toward the rear door.
Morales saw him.
“Drop the weapon!”
He fired.
Agents returned fire.
Cain fell beside the doorway.
Cassandra screamed and grabbed Lily.
Elijah kicked the gun away.
Morales entered and restrained Cassandra.
I ran to Lily.
Her vital signs were stable.
No emergency.
No transplant needed.
Cassandra watched me examine her daughter.
“Why are you helping her?”
“Because she is a child.”
The same answer I gave Elijah when he carried Toby into my ER.
I won’t let a child pay for your mistakes.
Cassandra began crying.
Not for me.
Not for Toby.
For the moment she finally understood her daughter had never needed the crimes committed in her name.
Cain survived long enough to bargain.
He offered the entire network in exchange for medical treatment and protection.
His first disclosure involved twelve private clinics.
His second involved children declared dead but kept alive as donors.
His third involved a name I knew.
Dr. Miriam Carter.
My mother.
She had supposedly died when I was eighteen.
Cain smiled weakly.
May you like
“She runs the network.”
👉 The rescue exposed the lie behind Lily’s illness, but Cain’s confession named Naomi’s dead mother as the woman controlling the entire donor operation.
