Chapter 12 - The Choice My Mother Expected

Miriam believed she knew me.

She expected the doctor to choose the children.

She expected the prosecutor to lose the case.

She had spent years designing situations where compassion protected criminals.

I looked at the two buttons.

Release patients.

Preserve archive.

One choice.

No time.

Then Ava touched my sleeve.

“Grandmother lies about buttons.”

I looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“She tests people. The labels are never true.”

Miriam’s smile vanished.

Ava had just broken the rule that kept her alive.

I studied the wiring beneath the panel.

The children’s pumps connected to a local system.

The archive connected to the ship’s network.

Different circuits.

The choice was manufactured.

I pressed neither button.

Instead, I pulled the emergency power lever.

The operating room went dark.

Battery backups activated on the patient monitors.

The archive server remained online through an independent supply.

Miriam struck the dead-man switch.

Nothing happened.

The pumps had defaulted to safe mode.

Morales shattered the glass and entered.

Miriam ran.

I released the children while agents chased her through the ship.

Ava helped calm a frightened boy.

She spoke softly.

Like a child who had done this too many times.

The archive was copied before the crew could erase it.

Names appeared.

Doctors.

Judges.

Billionaires.

Hospital executives.

Insurance officers.

Parents who knowingly bought illegal access.

Others who had been deceived.

The network reached eleven countries.

Miriam tried to escape in a launch boat.

The Coast Guard intercepted her.

She stood on the deck in handcuffs as I carried a sedated child past.

“You destroyed decades of work,” she said.

“I saved lives.”

“You saved six children and delayed treatment for millions.”

“No cure built on stolen bodies is medicine.”

She looked at Ava.

“You were my greatest disappointment.”

Ava stepped behind me.

I faced Miriam.

“No. She was the first person you couldn’t turn into yourself.”

Miriam was taken into custody.

The ship returned to port.

Noah met Ava inside a protected hospital wing.

He stared at her.

“You look like Mom.”

Ava answered, “So do you.”

They sat quietly beside each other.

No instant bond.

No magical healing.

Just two children learning the truth carefully.

Elijah watched through the window.

He asked to see Noah.

I said no.

Not yet.

He had agreed to testify against the network and surrender temporary custody.

But cooperation did not erase what he did.

Cassandra also accepted a plea deal.

She would testify against Adrian and Miriam.

She lost custody of Lily pending review.

Lily entered the care of an aunt uninvolved in the crimes.

Toby remained in the hospital.

His memory improved daily.

Then he told Morales one final detail.

“Cassandra wasn’t the one who hit me.”

“Who was?”

Toby looked toward Elijah through the glass.

“His daddy.”

Elijah’s father, Charles Blackwood, had supposedly died three years earlier.

Another closed casket.

May you like

Another false death.

👉 Toby’s recovered memory revealed that Elijah’s dead father was alive and had personally attacked him, proving Miriam was not the only founder still controlling the network.
