Chapter 17 - The Fire That Made Her Powerful

I did not bargain for Charles’s freedom.
I bargained for information.
He gave investigators coordinates for two locations.
Both were real.
Three missing children were rescued from a private clinic in Belize.
The fourth child, Mia Torres, had been moved.
Charles claimed Miriam ordered it.
Miriam denied everything.
Then he gave us the original recording from the night my father died.
My parents argued inside the laboratory.
Benjamin Carter had discovered Miriam was using donated embryos without consent.
He planned to expose her.
“You think medicine belongs to rules,” Miriam said.
“It belongs to patients.”
“It belongs to whoever is brave enough to advance it.”
“You are experimenting on children.”
“I am creating survival.”
He threatened to call federal authorities.
She left the room carrying his research.
Minutes later, the laboratory exploded.
A device had been placed near the gas line.
Charles arranged it.
Miriam ordered it.
My mother killed my father to protect the network.
Then staged her own death to escape suspicion.
The truth hurt differently from every other betrayal.
She had raised me to admire her.
She shaped my understanding of medicine.
Then she murdered the man who actually lived by its ethics.
I confronted her through the prison glass.
“You killed Dad.”
“He would have destroyed everything.”
“He tried to save children.”
“He tried to slow progress.”
“You keep calling cruelty progress.”
Miriam leaned closer.
“You saved Toby because you used my discipline.”
“No. I saved him because I kept my humanity.”
She smiled faintly.
“You still need me to find Mia.”
“We will find her without you.”
“You have three days.”
“Why?”
“Because Mia is scheduled for surgery.”
“Where?”
“Prove you are smarter than I raised you to be.”
The line ended.
We searched the rescued children’s records.
Mia’s file contained one unique code.
RAINIER.
A private hospital in Seattle had a surgical wing funded by Blackwood charities.
It had recently admitted an unnamed pediatric patient.
Morales coordinated the raid.
I flew with the medical team.
Mia was found in preoperative holding.
Alive.
Sedated.
A surgeon had already prepared to remove part of her liver for a wealthy recipient.
The operation was stopped.
The recipient’s family claimed they believed the donation was legal.
Investigators found evidence they knew otherwise.
Mia returned to her parents.
All eighty listed children were now accounted for.
Seventy-six alive.
Four had died in procedures years earlier.
Their families finally learned the truth.
The network was finished.
But the trials remained.
Miriam.
Charles.
Cassandra.
Adrian.
Cain.
Judge Vance.
And Elijah.
The public wanted one simple villain.
There were many.
Each had chosen a different excuse.
Science.
Family.
Fear.
Money.
Love.

None erased the children they harmed.
👉 Every missing child had been found, but the final trials would decide whether wealth and influence could still protect the adults who built the network.
