Chapter 11 - The Boardroom Without Her
At eight-thirty the next morning, Jasper entered Cole Urban Development’s boardroom.
He had not slept.
But his suit was immaculate.
Gillian sat behind him as a shareholder representative.
Priscilla waited outside with two public-relations advisers.
Jasper believed appearances still mattered.
The directors gathered around the long glass table.
Several avoided his eyes.
Martin Ellison opened the emergency meeting.
“We are here to address allegations of fraud, unauthorized collateralization, and failure to disclose material debt.”
Jasper leaned back.
“Allegations made by my wife during a postoperative emotional crisis.”
Gillian nodded solemnly.
“Hailey has struggled since the birth.”
One director shifted uncomfortably.
Jasper continued.
“She is being manipulated by her estranged father, who has always wanted control of this company.”
Martin looked toward the screen mounted on the wall.
“Mrs. Cole asked to address the board.”
Jasper sat forward.
“She is not an officer.”
“She is the alleged guarantor of our largest loan.”
The screen activated.
Hailey appeared from her hospital room with Toby sleeping beside her.
Charles and Naomi were visible in the background.
Jasper’s face darkened.
Hailey spoke calmly.
“I will not discuss my marriage. I will discuss my signature.”
Naomi displayed the forged guarantee.
Then the recovered footage of Gillian tracing Hailey’s name while Jasper watched.
The boardroom fell silent.
Gillian stood.
“This recording is illegal.”
“It came from a security system registered to Hailey,” Naomi replied.
Jasper pointed toward the screen.
“This proves nothing about intent.”
Hailey answered, “Then perhaps your own words will.”
The second recording played.
Jasper’s voice filled the boardroom.
If Hailey objects, we’ll say pregnancy has made her unstable.
One director covered his face.
Another stared at the table.
Gillian’s recorded voice followed.
Once she has no access to the accounts, it won’t matter what she says.
The present-day Gillian went pale.
Jasper turned toward the directors.
“This was taken out of context.”
Martin asked, “What context makes financial isolation of your wife appropriate?”
Jasper had no answer.
The board voted.
Nine directors supported immediate removal.
Two abstained.
Jasper voted against.
Gillian attempted to use her proxies.
Naomi informed the board that the trusts granting those proxies were funded through disputed loan proceeds and had been frozen by court order that morning.
Jasper stared at the screen.
His title vanished in less than seven minutes.
Martin removed the company access badge from the table in front of him.
“You are no longer authorized to enter corporate offices or systems.”
Gillian gripped Jasper’s shoulder.
“This is temporary.”
Hailey looked directly into the camera.
“No. What you did to me was temporary control. This is accountability.”
Jasper stood so abruptly that his chair struck the wall.
“You think your father saved you?”
Hailey remained calm.
“No. He reminded me I could save myself.”
Jasper left the boardroom under the eyes of the employees he had spent years intimidating.
But Priscilla was waiting outside with news that changed everything.
The bank had begun tracing the fraudulent loan money.
