Chapter 6 - The Missing Camera Footage

Charles called Naomi Grant, the attorney who had handled Hailey’s late mother’s estate.

Naomi arrived carrying a laptop and a portable scanner.

She was direct, calm, and unimpressed by Jasper’s reputation.

She examined the loan documents.

“This signature is excellent,” Naomi said.

Hailey stared at her.

“That is not comforting.”

“It means whoever created it had access to several genuine examples.”

Jasper had hundreds.

Tax returns.

Insurance forms.

Property documents.

Birthday cards.

Naomi compared the forged guarantee with a document Hailey signed at a charity gala.

The unusual curve in the final letter was identical.

“This was likely traced digitally,” Naomi said.

“Can we prove that?”

“If we find the original file.”

Hailey remembered Jasper’s home office.

A locked drawer beneath his desk contained a scanning tablet.

He had once become furious when the housekeeper moved it.

Charles asked whether the house had security cameras.

“Yes.”

“Who controls them?”

“Gillian.”

Hailey regretted the answer as soon as she said it.

Gillian had moved into the guest suite during the final month of Hailey’s pregnancy, claiming she wanted to help.

She had taken over the household staff.

Changed the alarm codes.

Installed additional interior cameras “for the baby’s safety.”

Naomi asked Hailey to log into the home-security account.

Her password no longer worked.

The recovery email had been changed to Gillian’s address.

Charles called the security company.

Because the account was registered in Hailey’s name, they restored access after confirming her identity.

Most footage from the previous six months had been deleted.

But deletion logs remained.

Each removal came from Gillian’s tablet.

One recording had been deleted three times from separate backups.

It was dated eleven weeks earlier.

The same week the loan guarantee had been signed.

Naomi contacted the security provider’s legal department and requested emergency preservation.

A technician recovered a low-resolution copy from an archive server.

The video showed Jasper’s office late at night.

Gillian sat at his desk holding several documents against the scanning tablet.

Priscilla stood beside her.

Jasper entered carrying a glass of whiskey.

The audio was faint but clear enough.

Priscilla asked, “What happens if she notices?”

Gillian replied, “She never looks at financial documents.”

Then Jasper placed the forged guarantee on the desk.

“She doesn’t need to know unless the company fails.”

Hailey stared at the screen.

Her husband.

His mother.

His sister.

All three had stolen her signature together.

Then Priscilla said something that made Naomi replay the footage.

“And if the bank asks her directly?”

Jasper smiled.

“She’ll be busy with the baby.”

Gillian answered, “Or recovering from one.”

The recording ended.

Hailey’s incision throbbed beneath the dressing.

They had counted on childbirth making her too weak to fight.

They had almost been right.

Naomi copied the video to three encrypted drives.

“This proves conspiracy and forgery.”

Hailey looked toward the door.

“What do we do now?”

Naomi closed the laptop.
