Chapter 3 - The Lie That Separated Them
Jasper recovered quickly.
“There’s been a misunderstanding.”
Hailey closed her eyes.
That was always his first defense.
Not an apology.
Not concern.
A misunderstanding.
Her father’s voice remained controlled.
“Did you give her bus fare?”
“She insisted on creating drama.”
“She is five days out from major abdominal surgery.”
“She was discharged.”
“That does not mean she was physically capable of traveling alone with a newborn.”
Jasper exhaled impatiently.
“My mother had a birthday lunch planned for months.”
Hailey looked at the nurse standing beside her bed.
Even the nurse seemed stunned.
Her father asked, “Where is the diaper bag?”
A pause.
“In the vehicle.”
“Her medication?”
Another pause.
“In the bag.”
“Her discharge papers?”
Jasper said nothing.
Hailey’s father’s voice became colder.
“You abandoned a recovering patient without medication while taking the newborn’s supplies with you.”
“I was going to send someone back.”
“You asked whether she had gotten on the bus.”
Jasper finally lost his polished tone.
“She called you to punish me.”
Hailey opened her eyes.
“No,” she said. “I called him because you left me with no one else.”
“That’s not true.”
“Who else was I supposed to call?”
Jasper hesitated.
His mother and sister had spent the last two years making certain Hailey had no one.
Every visit with friends caused an argument.
Every phone call with her father ended with Jasper accusing her of choosing her old family over her marriage.
Eventually, Hailey stopped calling.
Jasper had told her that her father considered her a disappointment for marrying him.
He said her father refused to forgive her for declining a position in the family company.
Hailey had believed him because every birthday card from her father had stopped arriving.
Every invitation disappeared.
Every call went unanswered.
Now her father said quietly, “Hailey, I have called you every Sunday for three years.”
She stared at the phone.
“What?”
“I sent letters. Gifts. Messages through your office.”
“I never received them.”
Jasper interrupted.
“This is not the time.”
Hailey’s heart began pounding.
“Did you block his number?”
“I protected our marriage.”
“You blocked my father?”
“He was trying to control you.”
Her father replied, “I was trying to warn her.”
Jasper went silent.
Hailey gripped the sheet.
“Warn me about what?”
Her father did not answer immediately.
When he finally spoke, his voice carried years of regret.
“About the debt Jasper hid before your wedding.”
Jasper ended the call.
Hailey stared at the dark screen.
The nurse gently took the phone from her trembling hand.
“Mrs. Cole, breathe slowly.”
But Hailey could barely hear her.
