Chapter 8 - The Words He Could Not Take Back

Hailey placed the original loan guarantee beside the replacement.

“These signatures are nearly identical.”

“Because they’re yours.”

She held his gaze.

“Where was I when the first one was signed?”

“At home.”

“What room?”

Jasper paused.

“The kitchen.”

Hailey nodded slowly.

“What was I wearing?”

His expression sharpened.

“What kind of question is that?”

“One a husband could answer if he watched his wife sign away twenty-five million dollars.”

Naomi remained silent.

Jasper shifted his attention toward her.

“This is intimidation.”

“No,” Hailey said. “It’s memory.”

He paced once across the room.

“You were pregnant. You signed dozens of documents.”

“I signed nothing without reading it.”

“You trusted me.”

“I did.”

Her voice cracked slightly.

“That is why you thought you could get away with it.”

Jasper leaned close to the bed.

“Be careful.”

Naomi immediately stood.

Hailey raised one hand.

“I’m fine.”

Then she looked back at Jasper.

“Did Gillian trace my signature?”

He said nothing.

“Or did Priscilla scan it?”

“Stop.”

“Which one of them accessed my email?”

“You’re destroying our family over paperwork.”

“You abandoned your family outside a hospital.”

Jasper’s control finally snapped.

“I was trying to save the company!”

The confession hung in the room.

Hailey did not react.

She let the silence force him to hear himself.

Jasper realized too late what he had said.

He glanced toward her phone.

The recording symbol glowed on the screen.

His face drained.

“You recorded me?”

“You admitted there was something to save.”

“I meant the replacement agreement.”

“Then why did your mother delete camera footage from the night my signature was copied?”

Jasper froze.

He had not known the footage survived.

Hailey saw it immediately.

“You thought it was gone.”

He grabbed the rolling table.

“Give me the phone.”

Naomi stepped between them.

“Do not move closer.”

Jasper lowered his voice.

“Hailey, you do not understand what happens if the refinancing fails.”

“Tell me.”

“Thousands of people lose jobs.”

“You stole my name to protect yourself, and now you’re hiding behind your employees.”

“I built that company.”

“With my family’s money.”

His face twisted.

“You would still be living in your father’s shadow if I hadn’t given you a life.”

Hailey looked down at Toby.

The baby slept peacefully through the cruelty.

Then she looked back at the man she had married.

“You didn’t give me a life. You slowly removed everyone from it until you were the only person left.”

Jasper’s anger disappeared.

In its place came something colder.

“If you refuse to sign, the bank will come after everything.”

“Not everything.”

Naomi opened her laptop.

“Only the assets Jasper actually owns.”

Jasper stared at the screen.

Naomi had already sent the forgery evidence to the bank’s fraud department.

The refinancing had been suspended.

His company’s board had been notified of an undisclosed liability.

Jasper’s phone began vibrating.

One call.

Then another.

Then five more.

He looked at Hailey with open hatred.

“What have you done?”

Hailey held Toby closer.

“What you should have done from the beginning.”

May you like

“I told the truth.”

👉 The refinancing was frozen—but Jasper’s mother still possessed one document that could take Toby away from Hailey.
