Chapter 15 - The Sister Who Chose the Truth
Jasper descended the cellar stairs.
The investigator stood beside the open safe.
Two witnesses were photographing every item.
And Priscilla stood near the wine rack.
Jasper stopped.
“You.”
Priscilla folded her arms.
“You hid everything down here.”
“Get out.”
“It’s not your house.”
He stared at her.
“What did you tell them?”
“The truth.”
Jasper stepped closer.
“I paid for your apartment. Your education. Your entire life.”
“With stolen money.”
“You knew where it came from.”
“No. Mom told me it was family money.”
“It was family money.”
“Hailey’s family.”
The investigator positioned himself between them.
“Mr. Cole, you are not authorized to remove anything.”
Jasper ignored him.
He looked at the contents of the safe.
The forged documents.
The recording devices.
The second phone.
His face changed.
Not anger.
Panic.
He lunged toward the black flash drive.
The investigator blocked him firmly.
Jasper shoved against the man’s shoulder.
One witness immediately called emergency services.
Priscilla picked up the flash drive and stepped backward.
“Stay away.”
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
“You think Hailey will protect you?”
“I’m not asking her to.”
“You’ll lose everything.”
Priscilla’s eyes filled with tears.
“I already lost everything when I realized what kind of family we are.”
Jasper’s jaw clenched.
“Mother will never forgive you.”
Priscilla almost laughed.
“Mom taught me forgiveness was something weak people asked for.”
Jasper moved toward her again.
This time, two private security officers entered the cellar.
They restrained him before he reached the drive.
He struggled only once.
Then he saw a camera recording from the top of the stairs and stopped.
He understood how the footage would look.
The investigator informed him that the property was under a preservation order.
Jasper demanded a lawyer.
As he was escorted upstairs, Priscilla called Hailey.
“I’m sorry.”
Hailey did not immediately answer.
Priscilla continued.
“I laughed when he gave you the bus money. I moved the diaper bag because I wanted Mom to think I was loyal. I knew you were hurting, and I enjoyed it.”
The honesty was brutal.
Hailey appreciated that more than excuses.
“You hurt me,” Hailey said.
“I know.”
“And you endangered Toby.”
“I know.”
“I’m not ready to forgive you.”
“I understand.”
“But telling the truth now matters.”
Priscilla cried quietly.
“I’ll testify.”
The black flash drive gave investigators evidence of forgery, illegal surveillance, coercive control, and attempted corporate theft.
It also contained one recording Jasper had forgotten.
A conversation with Gillian in which they discussed what would happen if Hailey refused the second guarantee.
Gillian said, “Then we take the baby and declare her unstable.”
