Chapter 7 - The Apology He Rehearsed

Jasper arrived at the hospital shortly after sunset carrying flowers.
He had changed his suit.
His hair was perfect again.
His expression showed carefully measured regret.
Hospital security stopped him outside the maternity floor.
He called Hailey.
“I’m downstairs.”
“I know.”
“Security says you banned me.”
“I asked them to protect my recovery.”
“I’m Toby’s father.”
“You abandoned Toby without food or diapers.”
“That was a mistake.”
Hailey looked at Naomi.
Naomi nodded.
“Come upstairs,” Hailey said. “Alone.”
Jasper hesitated.
“My mother wants to apologize.”
“She is not coming near me.”
He agreed.
Ten minutes later, he entered the room.
Charles remained out of sight in the adjoining family lounge.
Naomi sat near the window with her laptop closed.
Jasper recognized her.
His face tightened.
“Why is your father’s attorney here?”
“My attorney.”
He placed the flowers on the counter.
“Hailey, this has gone too far.”
She looked at the bouquet.
White roses.
The same flowers he brought whenever he needed her to forget something.
“You left me on a sidewalk.”
“I was angry.”
“Because I delayed your mother’s lunch?”
“You embarrassed her.”
Hailey almost smiled.
Jasper had rehearsed an apology, but even now he could not keep his mother out of it.
He sat near the bed.
“I handled it badly.”
“You closed the car door in front of your newborn son.”
“You were acting hysterical.”
“I said I could barely stand.”
“You always exaggerate pain.”
Naomi watched silently.
Hailey kept her voice soft.
“What do you need from me?”
Jasper’s eyes flickered.
“Nothing.”
“You came here with a briefcase.”
He glanced down.
“I brought insurance forms.”
“Show me.”
Jasper opened the case reluctantly.
Inside was the replacement loan guarantee.
He placed it on the rolling table.
“The bank made a clerical error. They need a clean signature before tomorrow.”
Hailey looked at the document.
Twenty-five million dollars.
Her shares as collateral.
The same terms as before.
“You said it was an insurance form.”
“It’s related.”
Naomi spoke for the first time.
“It is a personal guarantee.”
Jasper turned toward her.
“This is between my wife and me.”
“No,” Naomi replied. “It is between your company and the person whose assets you are attempting to pledge.”
Jasper stood.
“Hailey, send her out.”
Hailey remained still.
“Why?”
“Because private marital finances are none of her business.”
“You made them her business when you brought me a twenty-five-million-dollar liability five days after surgery.”
His jaw tightened.
“You signed the original.”
“No, Jasper. Your mother did.”
The room became silent.
Jasper’s eyes changed.
Only for a second.
But Hailey saw it.
Fear.
He recovered.
“You’re confused.”
Hailey reached beneath the blanket and turned on her phone’s recorder.
May you like
“Then explain it to me.”
👉 Jasper believed he could still manipulate Hailey—but one question about the forged signature pushed him toward a confession.
